Hello, I keep having R/W speed issues with my OWC ThunderBay 8 (TB3). I have 8x 8TB Seagate EXOS drives with 250/mbps sequential data rates RAID 0 which should give me outstanding performance. Of the 64TB I still have 20TB free.

I should be getting close to 2000/mbps but im am only getting 600W and 400R speeds!

(Yes I have everything backed up to the archive server and this is the active project drive filled with mostly video and photo files)

I understand I won't always have 2000r/w but this amount is so bad it makes me want to cry. Please help.

Try AJA System Test for more consistency

5K video resolution

RGBA codec

16 or 64GBfile size.

Do two tests, standard, then in settings disable "use file system" and see if there is a huge difference.

Also you can click the graph button when you have results and see if there are major dropouts in the test.

Attached is a screenshot of the test. I also attached a Softraid Report.

@jjsereday

While you won't get 2000MB/s, you should at least get 1200-1400. I put together a hodge podge of older drives and got this.

@softraid-support yea definitely not 2000, but anything above 1100 I’d be fine with. Just so frustrating having spent so much time and money and still constantly disappointed with performance 😭

@jjsereday

Also, disable Spotlight, to test if that is causing anything.

 Your performance is too low, something is going on.

Hey again, Im still trying to understand why this 8 Bay Thunderbolt RAID is giving such disappointing speeds. I have a QNAP server that delivers faster RW speeds in a RAID5 and this OWC Thunderbay only give me 700-900MB/s as a RAID0 with a direct Thunderbolt 3 connection.

I'll copy a folder of files, only 200GB (FCPX or Lightroom libraries) and it starts out stating 10 min remaining but after 5 min it slows down to 60 minutes! And this is after a BRAND NEW FACTORY RESET on the M1 Mac Mini with literally nothing else installed.

@jjsereday

Are these your own drives, or did they come with the enclosure?
if yours, what are the drives? Brand, model.

They are 8TB Seagate EXOS drives with 250/mbps sequential data rates

It seems like anything that has a lot of smaller files cause the slow downs.

I know someone from OWC tech mentioned that my stripe size was too small (128kb) though when creating the RAID through Softraid I chose Optimize for Video... so why wouldn't it have made the correct Stripe size choice when doing so?

@jjsereday

Generally, 64k is the best stripe unit size. the larger you go, the more innefficient your storage is, as the smallest amount of data that can be read is effectively 4x 128k or 512K. If you need 16K, you need to read 512K to get that and toss the rest. If all you are doing is reading for instance, 5GB files, it doesn't matter.

Finder performance will suffer, the larger the stripe unit size, as for example, your copies are 30,000 files for 18GB in files, plus multiple copies will always be slower.

What are you measuring performance with?

AJA System test is a good standard, with 64GB file size, 5K video and RGBA codec.

Hey so Im back again, this time using the M1 Max MBP. Still having major performance issues. I did a screen recording showing the issues.

When transferring files speeds would appear fine then after about 5 min they would drop significantly. Then I would see if I am doing anything other than letting finder copy, the SoftRaid speeds would drop to nothing.

What is going on here?! I can't even begin to tell you how frustrating this is, I have had so many problems with Softraid the past 2 years it makes me want to go back to QNAP.

In the logs I see this often even though I checked to prevent Mac from sleeping and unchecked putting HDs to sleep.

 Mar 09 14:01:04 - SoftRAID Driver: SoftRAID determined that there is a problem with your Mac. Turn off sleep in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences to prevent this problem from occurring.

Also I attached a Tech Log

@jjsereday

Also the Display sleep needs to be set to never.

Can you test with the Monitor (if possible) connected direct to the MacBookPro?

or, direct connect the Thunderbay.

Do either of these configurations help?

I can test with just the monitor next week but I just plugged into the Mac mini M1 and had issues as well with terrible RW speeds too. attaching Log.
