I hope that I'm not in the wrong place, but I didn't see a 1+0 forum.

I've been using Thunderbays from OWC for various things including backup from my dedicated fast external hardware RAID. I was thinking that using a full 4 drive bay for a RAID 1+0 backup might be preferable with 4 8TB drives, to using larger drives for mirrors. Especially when on a beta version of SoftRAID instead of my non-functional licensed version, I was wondering:

Is this a good use for a RAID 1+0?

Is it safe enough for backup?

Is it really almost as fast as a RAID 5?

Is it relatively easy to restore?

It is 2 drive redundancy, right? Frankly, I haven't had to think about this in a while. Just need a little help and reassurance. Thanks.

Lets go through your questions.

RAID 1+0 is good for a few reasons. It handles a disk failure well. 50% of the time, it can also handle 2 disks failures. RAID 1+0 is a very "safe" RAID type. However, it is not as fast as a RAID 5.

the beta status of SoftRAID is not material. the driver is solid regardless of RAID levels.

RAID is not the same as backup, RAID is for "High Availability". meaning a disk can fail and you keep running. You still need a independent media with your data on it, preferably a second copy off site, or on the cloud. Data is fungible.

Not sure what you mean by "restore", but RAID 1+0 is easier to "recover" from in the event of a disaster.

Hope this helps!

@softraid-support

Thank you, that does help. I did mean "recover".

So, for backup, a three drive RAID 1, with 2nd and 3rd drives rotated off site wouldn't be bad. That will just require some larger individual drives. So, if my primary working drive were SoftRAID 6 or six, I should probably need a 6 bay drive for good performance?

Off site backup would be good. I'm still figuring out which service is better for me.

@rupp

Multiple backups (secondary disks) with a Mirror is always a good option. We have had Printers who remove a disk monthly for an off line secondary disk, to archive that month's jobs. All you need to do is connect the off site disk and it will rebuild.

For off site, you have lots of choices:

1. Carbon Copy Cloner for local off line.

2. Backblaze for easy backup to the cloud

3. Acronis for a more comprehensive backup package, with proactive protection against cyber intrusion (hackers/ransomware)

Thanks again. Pre Big Sur, I was fine with Chronosync, but it's been a little weird since. I'll look into your cloud suggestions. Your support seems always to go above and beyond.

Other online resources state that RAID 1+0 is FASTER than RAID 5, especially with writes.  Can you clarify the performance differences using SoftRAID with RAID 1+0 versus 5?

@mountainman

It is not, at least not in my testing. Writes on RAID 5 are near 3 disks of 4 disks speed. RAID 1+0 is closer to 50% theoretical 4 disk speed.

@softraid-support hi there!

we bought SoftRaid recently and we have 2 disks with 12TB each in RAID 1 made in SOFTRAID.

in the near future we will buy another 2 disk with 12 tb or more.

and I have a question, a big one for me: how can I put the two disks to make 24 tb of disk space and the another two in mirror of those 2 disks without lose the data or there is no way?

@prepress_lbx

The only way we can make it easy is if you create a RAID 0 volume to start with, then convert to RAID 10.

We do not support RAID 0+1, so you cannot do this with Mirrors.

One idea is create another 12TB mirror, and if one is the backup to the other, use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner to schedule regular backups.

@softraid-support but soft raid allows me to set RAID 1+0 or I'm wrong? even I start over with 4 disks with 12tb, it's possible?

@prepress_lbx

Yes, SoftRAID supports RAID 1+0, I was commenting on how to "convert". If you can backup and create it, then absoutely, we support this.

@softraid-support thanks. can I do that with LITE version 6?

@prepress_lbx

Sorry no. Lite only supports 1 and 0.

You would have to settle for two independent Mirror volumes.

Hi, is it possible to choose which drives would be the primary and secondary in a RAID 1+0?

E.g. if I have some newer drives and some older, and I want to make sure that the RAID 0 is matching old or new drives, then the RAID 1 is a mirror of new drives to old drives?

@wichall

When you create the volume, you are asked which are primary disks. Select them at that point.

If you first give the disks SoftRAID "disk labels", it will help identify the ones you want as primary.
