SoftRAID reports that I've got one disk in my 4-disk 48TB RAID 5 (video; has less than 14TB in use) which should be replaced immediately due to a read error.
I don't want to appear dense, but I'll try my best:
1) Ought I attempt a backup to another mechanism before rebuilding, even though the bad disk could croak before I succeed?
2) To rebuild the RAID 5, I should simply remove the disk with errors and add its replacement, and the rebuild begins automatically, yes?
Thanks a bunch!
Yes always backup first and always maintain a backup! You never know what is happening with live data and you should always have 3 copies of all files, including one off site.
When you are backed up, then watch our video on the support/videos page on how to replace a RAID 5 disk, we go though all the steps.
