Hello!

I really need to get my RAID5 volume online after 5 months.. My emergency plan is to hook it up to an old Catalina macbook pro that also has thunderbolt-2 port - but is there anyway to do this on the commandline? I always used the UI before, but the volume attempts to mount and then fails gracefully without useful message..

It appears the commandline is the same where it seems to attempt the mount, returns "0" status (echo $?), but fails to mount. Can anyone provide guidance on ways to mount, using softraidtool or regular OSX commandds. I have been working with UNIX / Linux for many years, so I am comfortable in terminal environments but have rarely had the need to work on OSX directly, so not sure how to debug this...

Do you have access to Disk Warrior? It appears the volume directory is damaged. disktool attempts to auto repair volumes, but if the process fails, it either mounts the volume read only, or marks the volume as un-mountable. Disk Warrior is the best tool to fix this.

You can try some terminal "repair" commands, but I doubt they will work.

Here are a couple:

You need to find the correct volume BSD number, which SoftRAID will show you and use that instead of the disk6 listed here

sudo fsck_hfs -Race /dev/rdisk6
sudo fsck_hfs -fry /dev/rdisk6

Thanks! Before I do anything I am going to do a full copy of the RAID5 on my old laptop (MacBook Pro 2012 w/ Catalina). It will take a day to copy all the TB to the USB2 speed external drive I have (since that old laptop doesnt have USB3), but once done, I will try repair it on my Mac Pro 2013. Since I have a full backup, I can experiment with more vigor on BigSur..

I have a full backup and have started the process of trying to build a new RAID5 volume... I made the backup by connecting my Thunderbay for to an old MacBookPro and doing a full copy to some backup USB drives, so it was not accessible from the MacPro 2013 since my fateful upgrade to OSX11. At this point I really just need to get this 9TB volume working again so I can resume full use of my system, so I dont need to preserve any state or data.. just get this running on a new clean volume. I had hoped a new volume would allow both the OS and Thunderbay unit to clean up any corruption, but it appears something more needs to be cleaned up...

I have a MacPro 2013 (Intel Xeon 3.7Ghz Quad core w/ 32GB) running OSX 11.2.3

I have a Thunderbay 4 w/ 4 3TB disks purchased in 2015. It has been running reliably since that time, though I had to replace 2 disks re-emptively when recommended for replacement..

Does anyone know what "Error 125" is?

I suspect the driver is being blocked by macOS. Attach a SoftRAID Tech Support file and I can look.

Did you get the Open System Preferences dialog box to pop up when you installed the driver and allow OWC as an identified developer?

@softraid-support

I do not remember seeing the OWC identified developer option. I did have SoftRAID 6.0.1.b53 and later 6.0.1 as "Full Drive Access". I have done a variety of attempts to reinstall based on the recommendation, so hopefully I can figure it out, or you can recommend a specific action to resolve.

@ekleinbussink

The problem is you have too many old obsolete extensions. Here are instructions I have developed, hope you can follow along. Big Sur does not like this and can refuse to load any extensions as a result.

There are three stages in what you need to do.
Delete the extensions
reset the extensions cache
Reinstall the SoftRAID driver.

Run the terminal.app. the command you are going to use is:
sudo rm -r (as an admin, remove and delete all recursive files)
Then you need the path to each extension.
Go to "About this Mac", then System Report.
Click on the extensions section.
Click on "Obtained from" column and scroll down to the bottom.
Expand the top window a couple inches, so you can see all the extensions,
You need to delete:
ALL unsigned extensions
and, I recommend all extensions older than 2018, which likely need to be updated to run with Big Sur, if they run at all.

The first unsigned extension is an EyeTV extension. If you click on it and look below to "path", you will see:
/Library/Extensions/EyeTVAfaTechHidBlock.kext

This makes your terminal command:
sudo rm -r /Library/Extensions/EyeTVAfaTechHidBlock.kext
(you will need your admin password)
Delete all the unsigned extensions first.
Next delete all extensions dated before 2020. There must be updated versions if you still need to use those apps/devices.

There are a bunch of those also, also delete the Canon printer driver.

To make sure you got them all, close the System Profiler and create a new one and look at it. Are all the targeted extensions deleted?

Now you need to reset the extensions cache, with these two commands:

sudo kmutil clear-staging

followed by:

sudo kextcache -i /

restart.

Now you can run SoftRAID. Click on your startup tile. "reinstall SofRAID driver".
You should now get the dialog box to go to System Preferences/Security to "Allow" OWC as an identified developer. Unlock and click Allow. Now you can restart.

restart and that should do it.

Thank you very much, looks like I got a new volume built and mounted now. For anyone else reading this, I did not follow the instructions exactly with regards to deleting old drivers, but I did clean it up as much as possible, and ended up checking for new drivers from a few HW devices I knew I still had attached.

The Thunderbay 4 has worked great as a repository for my video files with LightWorks and my VMware VMs for my home sandbox, so nice to see the life of my system extended another generation of MACOSX. I guess I will need to buy the new SoftRAID6 upgrade now that it works... ;)
