I have had to rebuild my RAID 5 Volume on a ThunderBay 4 after a file system corruption following a computer crash. The volume appears to build correctly, and the 4 disks all check out ok. However, the volume does not mount, so it is inaccessible in Windows Explorer. The 4 drives and the "Raid Volume" (Disk 5) are visible in Disk Manager. Is this a known bug and is there a workaround so I can mount it and recover my lost data from my backup?

Windows 11 10.0.26100

Mercury Elite Pro Quad

4x Seagate Ironwolf 10TB

My OWC enclosure was delivered yesterday, along with 4 brand new seagate 10TB HDD's I was able to setup a RAID 5 volume (NTFS), and copy a bunch of files into the volume, however when I tried to access the files they suddenly disappeared. Next thing SoftRAID shows two drives as 'missing' - despite showing as 'healthy' in Softraid. I deleted the volume and attempt to start from scratch, but two of the drives are shown as only having 912mb free (impossible) thus there's not enough storage space to create a RAID5 volume with the drives.

I attempted to clean the drives in SoftRAID, but get a message saying they are protected by safeguard (despite there being no option to disable safeguard on the individual drives). Luckily I have a Mac computer for work, so I was able to completely scrub the whole volume (which was showing up as raid5 on my mac, interestingly). I then plugged the enclosure back into my windows computer, to start the whole process again.

I can create a RAID5 volume, copy files into it, however then these files disappear. I restart my computer, and now in SoftRAID I have duplicates of all of my drives!?! So two A drives, two B drives, etc. One set show 912.0 MB free per drive, the other shows 9.1TB free per drive.

Am I doing something wrong, and if so, what? This is the furthest thing from 'plug and play'? Can someone please advise on how I can fix these issues?

Looking for any help as I had some working files from this drive set and even temporarily could really use access to copy stuff over. I had a similar problem with this RAID1/2x8TB sata drives mounted internally maybe a year ago. I updated my SoftRaid app it worked again. I checked for updates and I'm all up-to-date. This RAID1 pair (2x8TB) won't mount in windows 11. If I go to view all disks, I can see them both. I have a feeling I got some indication from Disk Health that one of these was predicted to fail but I did not replace it although I have not seen anything since and that was some time ago. For a test, I cycled power and connected only one of this pair at a time. FIrst the primary then the secondary. When I powered on with only the primary I did not see the drive in Windows Explorer, but when launching SoftRaid I see it's asking me to add a member or remove member disks. I'm hesitant to do that although I wonder if it would then mount and I can get to my data to copy safely then rebuild the set with a new disk. However, I then cycled and removed the primary and only connected the secondary, and as expected, doesn't mount, but when I launched SoftRaid it sees the RAID. I think it made this disk now the primary (maybe temporarily) and shows #2 missing. It's slightly different in that it doesn't ask me in the window if I want to add/remove member I just see it's missing. I also went to all disks and clicked on this drive and show healthy. I'm wondering if there's a process of validation I should do or a way again of getting my data for now. It seems odd if one drive failed I can still see them both and that makes me worry about removing a member as maybe one is corrupt? If I were to remove a member from the primary set as it offered when I only had the primary connected, could I still potentially mount and read off the one that is still hopefully functioning correctly? Thanks for any help and guidance!
