Hi all, I have a headless Mac Mini that is running SoftRaid and going into it for the first time in a while, it pushed an update (5.8.4) to my machine. But running the update, it came back with an error about limited version because my machine is running in Secure Boot mode.
Here's the problem... it's headless. I can't just go reboot and hit Command-R and do all the stuff that the directions require because... IT'S HEADLESS.
How am I supposed to resolve this? Thinking back on this previously a year or so ago, I recall getting this error with a previous update and I just left it as-is, but I want to get this resolved because it's a bit bush-league to be running in some kind of cobbled setup.
I'm using Monterey on my machines because of concerns with printer drivers for my printers and what Apple is effectively doing to make QuadToneRIP less viable, so I've avoided upgrading the OS on these machines.
MacOS has been doing this for several years now, any program that requires an extension has to enable third party developers (have reduced security). This is likely a T2 equipped Mini, so reduced Security is required.
5.x will not run on Monterey, however, so you must be running on the limited SoftRAID default driver bundled into MacOS.
With Ventura 13.4, there is no longer a need for the SoftRAID driver to have reduced security, as it is now a System extension (in /System/Library, not /Library/Extensions)
You are going to have to do two things:
upgrade your SoftRAID to the current version (there is no monitoring/management when you do not have SoftRAID installed), and either upgrade MacOS, or set the computer to enable third party Developers (what apple calls reduced security) I am not sure where your mini is located, but seems like you need to set up maintenance runs where you can attach a Monitor/keyboard for stuff like this.
Thanks for the info on this.
I'm fine to upgrade the OS on the server I think, so I can do that, and I presume it will break the SoftRAID software since it isn't compatible, so I'll need to upgrade that as well. However, this is a bit of a chicken or egg problem. Which do I do first and I guess I'm going to have to have a monitor and keyboard in there, which is a problem for a headless computer... it somewhat defeats the purpose of running headless and using the screen share aspects of the Mac OS to do the admini tasks.
Obviously, I haven't have any problems with my RAID setup but I didn't realize that SoftRAID wasn't actually running this past year or so (it's supposed to be silent and in the background, but I guess it isn't even running).
It was running, or your vooume would not mount! Its the notifications and management that stop.
It does not matter what order you do this, but my advice is unplug all external drives when upgrading macOS. Just best practice.
When you connect your drives, they will mount, even if you have not yet installed SoftRAID on the server.
Last question... I have Akitio drive bay boxes from before OWC acquired them and I presume that will work with the XT version (which is what I've been using so far). I don't recall that language about the "OWC-only" in the descriptions when I first bought the software.
Many thanks.
Its borderline, as some Akitio boxes were not fully MacOS certified, so we did not add them to supported enclosures for XT. However, we are likely to include support for them next year sometime.
If you bought SoftRAID Pro, then yes they will be supported.
