Hello. Been using SoftRAID6 and OWC Thunderbay4 48tb RAID with MBP Sierra (also on a MBP with Big Sur) for just a few months, no issues at all. Yesterday, a cable got bumped as it was mounting and the storage unmounted, then it remounted (I didn't realize it) and I unplugged it again and so I got two i/o errors. I validated the volumes and after 18+ hours, said it was all good. The errors won't clear though. I've done the "Clear i/o counters" and it removes those errors from the individual drives, but not the volume. When selecting the volume in the SoftRAID app, still says volume degraded failed, no errors. Individual drives selected on own say no errors, but as part of the volume say data and parity disk failed. The storage seems to be working fine otherwise. I contacted OWC and they had me reinstall the SoftRAID driver, no changes. The errors show on the other MBP and with a different cable. They recommended the Recover Failed Disk option, and that its non destructive and just rebuilding. Are there any other ways of clearing these error or verifying if there is truly something wrong other then Recover Failed disk option?

Thanks

If you have more than one disk out of sync, then "recover failed disks" is the solution. Go ahead and let if validate, even though I think you just did so, as it is a background task.

If the volume still shows errors, you can clear the iO error counter, just like you did with the disks.

@softraid-support Appreciate the quick reply. I'll validate it again (previously it did say it updated 41 blocks) and then I'll try the recover failed disk option if the errors don't clear. How long does it for recover failed disks to do its thing (48tb RAID5 using 17+tb and 18+tb remain)?

@lfornasir

You have it backwards. You must use "recover failed disks". A validate won't clear the error condition.

@softraid-support oh! ok. Is it alright to cancel the validation process and go right to 'recover failed disk' mode then?

Completely safe, yes.
