This looks like an interesting unit:
https://www.netstor.com.tw/product_info.aspx?SerID=2&Title=Thunderbolt&ArID=92&PID=PID_190328202742977

Four nvme slots and Thunderbolt 3.

How are my chances that this will play nicely with SoftRAID using RAID-5 on a Mac mini running Mojave? Has any brave soul been there before me?

Unless the box is somehow defective or not reliable, it won't make any difference to SoftRAID. It will look like 4 drives and SoftRAID will be able to create a RAID 0 or 4 with it easily.

SoftRAID will work fine with it.

Unfortunatly it does not seem that SoftRAID is able to make valid RAID volumes on this device. Using four Samsung 970 PRO 1TB devices.

Using Disk Utility, Apple RAID makes RAID-0 and RAID-1 just fine.
SoftRAID 5.75 however cannot make any valid volumes, neither RAID-0, RAID-1, RAID-4 nor RAID-5. It errors with "error 31", (whatever that is).

"SoftRAID was unable to create a file system on this volume"
"SoftRAID Application: The volume create command for volume "RAID4" () failed with an error (error number = 31)."

Maybe someone else can make use of this.

This is a file system issue, we are making a file system call and OS X is not completing it.

Try reinstalling the "Combo updater" for your OS. I suspect that will work.

You are right. Moving the unit to another Mac SoftRAID was able to handle the unit. (This was also a move from High Sierra to Mojave)
