I am using an OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual, set to RAID 0, and one of the disks is making ominous noises and causing the drive to unmount. I'm sure it needs replacing, but the drive shows up as a single disk in both SoftRAID and Disk Utility.
Is there a good way to determine which of the two disks is bad without waiting for it to fail completely and then testing the disks by themselves?
Thank you in advance!
This is essentially a hardware RAID enclosure.
IF this is in "RAID 0" mode, you need to backup ASAP and replace it. Probably the only way to tell the drive is take the cover off and "feel" if either is vibrating erratically. If RAID 1, you can remove the bad disk and the volume should still mount. Safest is back up in any case before you do anything!
The only other way is take it out of RAID mode, into single disk (JBOD) mode, then you can test each disk individually. But this will destroy your data.
So backup ASAP!!!
Thank you. I talked to OWC Tech Support as well, and the rep indicated that a red light will turn on over the bad disk if it has failed completely.
Luckily, I have everything backed up already, in two different places.
