Drive spin down delay in Finder
I am having an issue where the drive spins down to a sort of sleep mode which causes access delay in the finder. The checkbox for "Put drives to sleep when possible" is not checked. But if I access a file in the finder via quicklook, like a PDF, and then two minutes later access another file the same way, I have to wait for the spin-up to occur. This takes several seconds and is extremely annoying because of the delay.
Is there any way to control this? Why does the drive spin down when I am actively using the system and the system is no way near a sleep mode?
Thunderbay 4 running RAID 5 with SoftRAID 6.0.3 on MacMiniM1 11.3
With your settings it should not. Drive spin down is controlled by macOS, not SoftRAID. Whatever is happening would happen with any disks, you an try with an external disk in Apple format.
If you set sleep to "never" does this still happen?
I just set sleep to never as an experiment, but this is happening when the system is awake and actively being used. So I am not sure why would it make a difference?
I can use a utility to "keep awake" the drive which I really don't like as that feels like an unstable solution. I can't imagine I am the only person experiencing this issue. Is there any spin-down controlled by the firmware of the Thunderbay?
There is nothing in the Thunderbay, it is a pass thru enclosure. There is nothing in SoftRAID.
It has to be someting in your system.
I occasionally get issues like this, but it is not SoftRAID caused, SoftRAID does not talk to the file system ,nor have any impact on these kinds of system settings.
