I have MacStudio and a Drobo 8D, Drobo 5D3, Pegasus 32, NVME Sabrent connected and never had an issue,

two days ago I introduced my OWC Thunderbay 4 in to the mix and it works no issue as long as i plug Thunderbay in while computer is running

However when I start up my Mac Studio computer will start up to immediately shut down again (Raid 5).

Only way around is to disconnect Thunderbay start up mac and fully boot and then plug Thunderbay back in.

Again OWC the only devices with this issues Apple must not like you guys.

Is there a fix as that is painfull??

If you "report to Apple" after restart and see "DART" in the top line, it is a M1 bug that Apple should have a fix for eventually.

There are a couple workarounds:

Wait 5 minutes before connecting the enclosure.

Pull 1 disk out an inch, then after 5 minutes push it in.

delete your volume and create it again with 64k Stripe unit size. That should avoid this.

This issue is more than a year old and while we know Apple is working on a solution, its taking way too long.

@softraid-support thanks for that, sad to see that the OWC still have so many issue with a Mac just not usable for any production enviroment.

A bit over a year ago I sold two of my 3 Thunderbays due the the ejection issues. I keept one Thunderbay and it worked ok on my M1 MacMini Media Center

a few days ago I though all the issue where possibly sorted and introduced it again to my working Mac Studio just to see once more the OWC

devices don't work as expected. Apple bug or not only happens to OWC all other 3 raid devises work fine.

Is it time for OWC to ditch soft raid and move to a hardware raid solution like Promise?

I just reformatted the Thunder-bay and now have 30TB of data on it, If you know there are issues why didn't SoftRaid instruct or at least suggest to format as 64k Stripe unit size if using Silicon??????

Now shuffling 30TB around is a pain not good at all

@steve223

We are told continually that the fix is coming "soon", so don't want to change all our documentation, in multiple languages, for something that was expected to be fixed shortly.

the eject is strange, as I manage 30+ thunderbays in the lab. None have ejection issues. Maybe because we use low end monitors, but in the lab, disk ejects are pretty much non existent.

@steve223

This is the DART controller panic triggering that, then. OK. thanks. Sorry you are hit with this. As you probably know, Apple is sitting on a full reproducible system of this, since nearly a year.

@softraid-support yep as I said they don't like you, the only Raid which had constant issues because of supposed Apple bug's are the OWC, such a shame as otherwise you have great products. As I said time for Hardware raids Apple does not like the software raids it seems

@steve223

a non inclusive list of issues I would love Apple to fix are:

M1 kernel panic on RAID 5

APFS encrypted volumes kernel panic

Disk Ejects in Thunderbolt  (generic)

disk renumbering during sleep (volume locking is SoftRAID's way to prevent data corruption)

Disks constantly waking from sleep, and going to sleep during work (not SoftRAID related)

Time Machine keeps volumes open, even after unmount

Support for TRIM over USB in default macOS

Supporting SoftRAID will be so much easier, once/if these are fixed!

@steve223

I think Apple engineering really likes our work. But they have no time to address serious issues, is my guess. macOS has become very cranky over the years and every new release adds new issues, not just for us, but in the kernel, file system, user interface, security mechanisms. It would be my dream to have a year off from new UI stuff, and just fix the hundreds of macOS bugs.

@softraid-support yep Apple did that a few years ago can't remember what it was called but only bug fixes and speed improvements and a few small new things was the most stable version

@softraid-support this causes me again quite a few headaches having to move now 30TB around event though the Raid was just initialised a few days ago, on one hand you saying the issue is there for over a year but then you don't want to warn customers because it's soon fixed?

I think we know by now that Apple does hardly fix anything soon. The constant issue with OWC Raids, Soft Raid and Apple are a might pain

Same problem here but with a Raid 0 and 64k Stripe unit size.

I can't turn off the computer. Only works if I unmount my Thunderbay mini. Mac Studio Ultra. This problem doesn't happen in my old iMac.

Solutions?
