@cell-666

Thanks for the clarification. And this is still happening with the 6.2.1 driver installed?

This is one of the issues we addressed by tagging SoftRAID volumes as "removable."

It is yes 6.2.1 I did a re-instal with instructions the other evening. As I mentioned it's only the TM drive behaving like this. It's a lot better on 6.2.1 the is for sure, at least the drives do unmount. For information does it make any difference unmounting with SoftRAID or using MacOS? I typically use the OS right click unmount?

@cell-666

Makes no difference how you unmount. SoftRAID app is just making a macOS call.

Time Machine must be keeping the volume open.

I wouldn't be surprised. Even though I have Spotlight disabled I've actually seen spotlight constantly read the driver to a point where it's read twice as much as the stored data that's on it. But, should Spotlight be indexing TM backups?

@cell-666

I don't think it should be, no.You can exempt the Time Machine volume, of course.

@softraid-support Tried that, you can add it to the privacy box. Unless I’m missing something?

@cell-666

Yes, the privacy box is how to exempt.

This has to be Monterey, we only started getting these issues recently, the past month or so.

@softraid-support I'm leaning more to M1 more than just Monterey. I have the same setup with my late 2019 i9, on Monterey and didn't have of these issues. I made sure everything was fine on Monterey with the i9 MBP before I stuck my hand in my pocket and forked out for this M1 Max. Don't get me wrong it's incredible for my workflow which is video editing, but these little niggles are frustrating until Apple addresses some of the problems.

6.2.1 has helped though on the issue with my OWC unit so it's going in the right direction :)

I am migrating from an old mac pro to a new mac studio. I have a SoftRaid Pro 5.x license on my mac pro. Before upgrading to the 6.x license I wanted to ensure all data has been migrated. To accomodate this I installed the trial version of SoftRaid Pro onto my mac studio.   Since my Drobo isn't supported on Monterrey I purchased a Thunderbay 8 and 4 x 14TB drives with the intention to raid 5 these 4 and migrate data from my Drobo which is not supported in Monterrey. I have migrated a mirrored set from my mac pro into the thunderbay 8 and Softraid beautifully recognize that raid set. As I'm about to migrate another raid set, my machine went to sleep and one of the 14TB drives in the raid 5 set "was removed or stopped responding while the volume was mounted and in use". This has happened several times and I've turned off the energy saver feature to put discs to sleep when possible, though i still have the display sleep feature turned on. The error still occurs and has a few times cause a raid rebuild.

Oct 30 13:24:07 - SoftRAID Driver: A disk (disk9, SoftRAID ID: 098D66FCCFC7C300) for the SoftRAID volume "42TB_4x14" (disk12) was removed or stopped responding while the volume was mounted and in use.

I should add that before creating the raid set, I certified all 4 of the 14TB drives which passed with no errors after 3 passes

When i get the message it's always the same drive which reports being removed (or stopping responding).

Since the drive reports no errors, is this the software, the drive or a weird OS thing?

Please advise

@imgoinmad

With only one enclosure this should not be happening. Try moving to a different bus on the Studio, see if that helps.

@softraid-support

I moved from the back TB4 port on the left to the one on the right but same response, they seem to be unrelated.

Seems to be connected to the mac going to sleep. If i have the turn display off after xxxx enabled once the display turns off the mac goes to sleep and on awake that one drive seems to be slow to wake

Screen Shot 2022 10 31 at 8.48.15 AM

This error message was visible when i woke the machine but it's not obvious if the loss of disc was as the machine was sleeping or as it awoke.

If i check the box that says "prevent your mac from automatically sleeping when display is off" then the error never occurs.
In my head I think I'd prefer the mac goes to sleep if the screen goes off provided it's not in the middle of an activity...I'm not sure how that function works...IE if i were moving large files and had screen turning off at 15 min....would this put the machine to sleep in the middle of moving files? That wouldn't be good...at the same time if it went to sleep once that ativity is complete i'd think it would provide longer life to drives and all electronics which are 'on' when the machine is not sleeping.

I tried this again and see that the message displays the time of the wakening of the machine as does the softraid log...once again, this caused the raid set to go out of sync (see new support file and entries from Oct 31 9:06AM

@imgoinmad

Maybe by "MacOS 20" it will be fixed (sarcasm alert).

This sleep issue has been around for more than 5 years. I think since the introduction of Thunderbolt. Something happens to deactivate the Thunderbolt chips/bus for a microsecond, which causes one or more disks to reset.

Hi,

a couple of days ago I upgraded my system to Big Sur, but after encountering issues with the RAID, yesterday I upgraded to Monterey. I previously had SoftRAID XT 5.8.4 and with this OS upgrade, I upgraded it to 7.5. Today it gave me an error and after re-starting the computer all the drives on my RAID 5 show now an error. The RAID volume itself shows no errors, but it has been degraded. It seems to me unlikely that all drives are failing all at once and more likely that something else is causing this issue. Any thoughts? Find here below my log.

Thanks

@zaja

Please attach a SoftRAID tech support file, I do not need the log.

Are you getting any Finder message that the volume is damaged and mounted read only?

@softraid-support Find the SoftRAID tech support file attached here.

I get a SofRAID Read Disk error (see below) with all the drives. I'm midway in the process of verifying all the drives and SoftRAID has yet to encounter any error
