I'm helping a friend who is using an OWC Thunderbay 4 with a 2015 iMac running Monterey. The drive, with Softraid, worked fine until yesterday. At that point, her computer began running very slowly and we determined that her boot drive (fusion) was full. So we proceeded to remove files from that drive. As a final precaution we launched her machine in Safe Mode, which clears caches and does some other housekeeping.
After that, her Thunderbay no longer mounts. It has a status light on the front which indicates that it is connected to the computer (it's blue, not red). But the drive does not appear on the desktop, nor is it visible in Disk Utility.
The Softraid icon is not present in the main menu bar (it was visible yesterday). So we attempted to launch Softraid from the applications folder. The main app window appears for an instant and then disappears, and Softraid does not run (I'm assuming it has crashed). We believe she was running Softraid 6.2 (she has many versions in the applications folder -- but that's the latest).
Does anybody have any idea what went wrong here and what we can do?
Many thanks, in advance, to anyone who can help.
Get a support file posted. Doesnt matter what version of SoftRAID at the moment.
I wish I could -- the app launches (we are now using 6.3), shows the main application window for maybe 1 second, and then closes (or crashes).
Use terminal:
sudo softraidtool generatereport ~/Desktop/Steve24.10.13.23.sr_supt
Paste this in, you need your admin password, and attach the file on the desktop.
Okay, thanks. That produced the following text in terminal. The generated file is attached.
Thanks very much!
Executing: /usr/bin/kmutil showloaded

It does not appear that the drives are connected. Can you confirm they were connected when the support file was saved?
If they are connected, then it is a hardware issue, the drives are not showing up to macOS. check power, cables, etc. Make sure a USB cable is not being used, the cable has the Thunderbolt logo on it for example.
If not connected, connect the drives and save a new file. (I dont need the terminal text output, just the file)
The drive was connected. And showing a blue colored LED which indicates that it's getting power. It's a Thunderbolt 2 raid. Remember that I can't launch SoftRaid. If the problem was with the drive and it wasn't mounting, wouldn't Softraid launch? (It launches and instantly quits.)
remember you cannot run 6.x in Monterey, your customer needs to run 7.6.
But regardless the drives are not showing up to macOS.
It is very confusing to figure out which version is for which OS. This is OS 12.6.5 on a 2015 iMac (no T2). 6.3 won't run? She's been running it with either v5 or v6 for a long time without problems (not sure which, anymore). And it's a Thunderbolt 2, 4 drive Raid.
I have a case now with phone support and they suggested 6.3. Which, as I said, won't launch.
So I looked at your website --
https://softraid.com/whats-new-softraid-7-for-mac/#toggle-id-1
If you are going to upgrade to macOS 13 Ventura, SoftRAID 7 is required.
If you are not upgrading to macOS 13 Ventura, you can continue to use SoftRAID 6 for Mac with your current OS.
Not true?
Here is the summary:
6.0 is required for Big Sur. 6.3 required for Monterey. 7.0 required for Ventura. 7.6 required for Sonoma
correction:
remember you cannot run 6.x in Monterey, your customer needs to run 7.6.
Should be:
remember you cannot run 6.2.1 or earlier in Monterey, your customer needs to run 7.6.
6.3 works, but best version is the current 7.6
Okay, we have some additional info & some success.
The SoftRAID driver version has no real functionality differences, the driver mounts the volumes, for the most part. So complete the backup before going anywhere else.
Okay, thanks for that. So this implies that the driver is now and working. We have completed a full backup of the RAID. My friend needs to get some work done, but after that, what do you suggest as a next step?
