Hello, I just bought an 8 Drives OWC to do a RAID5 system. (I'm coming from a Drobo 5D).

I'm going to start with 2 disks using SoftRaid to do a RAID5 configuration.

I'm then going to transfer the data from other disks to the OWC then add the "old" disk to the OWC enclosure (So I will have 2 disks to start, then 3, 4, 5...).

What is the procedure to add disk and having them part of the initial RAID5 configuration ?

Thanks !

I am sorry, SoftRAId does not work like Drobo.

A RAID volume cannot be given additional disks to increase its size.
(it does not have to fool the file system either)

You need to start with the full set of disks create your volume, then copy the data to it.

Sorry.

Well, then maybe you _should_ work more like Drobo.  The idea that you would start with all the disks and all the capacity you would ever need is ridiculous.  You need to be able to expand.  What are you supposed to do, reinitialize all your drives and start over when you want to add something?

@randysk

There is a reason Drobo went bankrupt. I have heard from two separate data recovery companies that Drobo was a huge profit center.

To make it work, you need to put a hack on the file system. (making the OS think the volume is larger than it is). Variable stripe unit sizes is a nightmare.

Great in theory, but we are not going to work on this kind of technology.
