Hello,
it's me again :) I have a question for the SoftRAID certify-process.
I'm certifying 4 Disks á 3 TB.
On one disk, I got this certify-errors:
: The certify disk command for disk disk4, SN: Z1F1WLKK, SATA bus 0, id 0 (Thunderbolt) hung while writing (offset 2,996,947,648,512, i/o block size = 16,777,216). This disk should be replaced immediately.
: The certify disk command for disk disk4, SN: Z1F1WLKK, SATA bus 0, id 0 (Thunderbolt) hung while writing (offset 2,997,014,757,376, i/o block size = 16,777,216). This disk should be replaced immediately.
: The certify disk command for disk disk4, SN: Z1F1WLKK, SATA bus 0, id 0 (Thunderbolt) failed because this disk has unreliable sectors. It should be replaced immediately (error number = 66).
The disk has 11khs of use, which is about 1 1/2 year.
Now the errors seem to come at the last few sectors of the 3TB disk, and on the GUI I get the info: "new assigned Sectors: 1464" (translated by me from german to english)
Has the disk really a problem, so I shouldn't use it? (I do backups, so I wouldn't lose data ... but I would lose a lot of time for re-setting-up the RAID0)
Because, as far as I know, every disk get's bad sectors and reallocates them by using spare sectors - by design. Correct me, if I'm wrong.
SMART-Status says (also from the GUI) says: Test passed
I know, this is a very specific topic but maybe it helps other users :)
Thank you very much! :-)
There have now been several studies on disks. All of them determined that once disks start reallocating sectors, even one, the odds of failure rise dramatically.
So a disk with important data, even one reallocated sector is cause for concern. 2 or more, you need to replace the disk.
In your case, there are 1400 reallocated sectors. In the 80's or 90's, this would be normal for disks. No longer. Modern disks should have ZERO reallocated sectors, and any disk with more than one reallocated sector is unlikely to last more than a couple months. Yes that disk could last years longer, but statistically, it is like having very high blood pressure and very high cholesterol at the same time. You might find it hard to get a life insurance policy. ;-)
Hope this helps.
Wow, thank you for the quick response! It was very helpful.
I recognized after a little research, that I have one of THAT Seagate Baracuda 3 TB Disks, which has a failure rate of over 200% per year (src: blackblaze.com).
Over 200% you ask? yes! that means, that a disk failes in a year, gets replaced and even the replaced disk also fails in the same year!!
Paying 100 bucks for a new HDD.... saving a lot more money for the life insurance policy ;-)
You are the best :-)
Great software by the way!!
