I have a 4x 3TB disks and now have 3x 2TB volumes, Raid 5.
I would like to remove one of the disks from the Raid array so that I can use it separately as an encrypted TimeMachine disk. This will leave me with 9TB in a 3 disk Raid 5 array which should provide sufficient storage for 3x 2TB volumes.
I tried removing one of the disks from one of the volumes, but I get a degraded notice and a lot of warnings. SoftRaid does not look happy.
What is the correct procedure for removing the disk from each volume while maintaining integrity?
A RAID 4/5 volume is "permanent" in the number of disks in the volume. You cannot remove one disk and have any redundancy.
To change a 4 disk RAID 5 to a 3 disk RAID 5 will require backup, delete, create a new volume.
