Can't make RAID 1 mirror with two SSDs with differing physical sizes?

I'm trying to convert my current 512 GB Crucial CT512MX100 SSD boot drive (macOS 10.12.6) into a RAID-1 boot volume, by adding a second 500 GB Crucial CT500MX500 SSD to my system and creating a SoftRAID mirror volume.

The problem I'm having is that SoftRAID won't allow me to create a Mirror volume with the "Max" 500 GB size. It says that the maximum size of the volume I can make is comically small, like 17 GB or something. I'm guessing because of the difference in size between the two SSDs

Am I mistaken in thinking that you can create a RAID-1 volume this way? I was under the impression that you could mirror two drives like this, and the total size of the mirror volume would simply be the size of the smallest drive in the volume set?

I presume the current disk is the smaller.
Take the second disk and initialize it with SoftRAID.
then "convert" the first disk to SoftRAID, if you have not already
Then "Convert" to a Mirror and select the second disk.

That should be all that is required.
