Hello,

I have created RAID 1 volumes before, but always when the data was external. Now I have the data that I want to mirror on one of the disks that I plan to use in the volume. Is it possible to set this up without having to make a copy first, then import back in or is there some type of "merge" feature I haven't discovered in my research?

Peace,
Dr. Z.

We support converting the main volume to SoftRAID.

Use Convert to SoftRAID on the volume with data.
Initialize disk #2.
"Convert" again and convert your volume to a Mirror.

Note: you need to boot from a different device to do these steps.

When you say "boot from a different device", are you referring to this step when the startup volume is being mirrored? My data is on a separate disk. Regardless, I am still cloning a copy for safety (and offsite storage) before attempting the convert via SoftRAID. In fact, I really like your "3 disk RAID 1" suggestion and plan to implement that soon.

Peace,
Dr. Z.

If all volumes on a disk you are converting are unmountable, then you can just go ahead. Its when there are boot volumes, or volumes that cannot be unmounted, that it gets trickier.

In your case, it all seems straightforward to convert.

The previous installments of this series on the Btrfs filesystem have focused on the basics of using Btrfs like any other Linux filesystem. But Btrfs offers a number of features not supported by the alternatives; near the top of that list is support for multiple physical devices.
