Raid 1 both drives think they are primary
I had a Raid 1 setup on 2 external USB drives. I accidentally unplugged one and after reconnecting the drive and rebooting the volume shows up twice...both drives think they are primary and they show as the same volume name but each with no secondary drive. I'd have expected the raid to complete once the 2nd drive was reconnected.
SoftRAID 5 tries to reconnect the drives back into a single volume when possible. There are cases when it is not possible, such as if a resatart occurs, or the mirror was out of sync.
Once a Mirror splits, then you must manually put it back together. The volume with the older creation date in the volumes tile was the original primary. You need to manually look at files, but this is probably the volume to keep.
Disable Safeguard on the other volume, then delete it.
then "remove missing secondary disk" and "add secondary disk" and let it rebuild.
this is a large volume, rebuilding is reporting 2 days. Is there a way to pause it so a reboot can be done and then let the rebuild continue?
Go ahead and restart. the rebuild will automatically start again where it left off and rebuild in the background.
I have shut down Softraid 3.8 while it's rebuilding, and is about 80 Percent done, and it starts from the beginning and takes about 30 hours.
Does Softraid 5 run faster than 3.8
Does Softraid 3.8 not start where it left off, if you do a shutdown while its rebuilding?
I assume you have 3.6.8, there was no retail version called 3.8
Yes it starts at the beginning. This was changed with SoftRAID 4.0 and later, SoftRAID resumes where it left off.
Both versions of SoftRAID will rebuild as fast as the hardware allows. However, change optimization to server, to speed up rebuilds.
SoftRAID 4 and 5 also have fast mirror rebuilds, where most rebuilds take a few minutes. Perfect for maintaining an off site backup archive.
