G’day, this is my first post here so I hope I have the right forum. I am new to SoftRAID and the forum.
I was led to SoftRAID when I had a mirrored RAID set up in a previous version of Mac OS X fail. Tech tool Pro was warning me of this and I thought I’d fix it with Disk Utility but discovered that Apple had dumped support in El Capitan. Online searches to resolve the problem pointed to complicated (at least for me) command line methods but fortunately someone mentioned SoftRAID. I downloaded the trial version and set about fixing the broken raid. I converted the raid to soft raid removed the faulty drive and added a replacement which I had either certified or verified (I don’t remember which) and it started rebuilding. This has been rebuilding since the 14th and although I was aware it would take some time, I think this is far too long. The HDDs are 2TB. Apart from 2 or 3 times when I left the Mac running overnight (and into the next day) I shut down each night.
Sorry for being so long-winded but what should I do? BTW I have since purchased SoftRAID Lite.

The volume must be mounted to rebuild. Is it?

The volume icon shows on the desktop, shows in Path Finder list and "Unmount" is available in the SoftRAID Volumes drop-down menu.

Thanks for getting back to me. I'll certainly do that.
In the meantime as further time had gone by and the rebuilding was still going I thought I'd try another approach,, so yesterday morning before firing up I pulled the secondary disk and put a replacement in. This had been previously verified, i added it and did a remove missing secondary. However it still showed the red warning text about a missing secondary disk.
You'll probably discover subsequent steps from the report but I'll leave it at that for now.

What first name was in the support file when you emailed it? I don't see it.

Is this sufficient information?

Yes, probably enough.

SoftRAID supports up to 16 disks in a Mirror volume. Your mirror is rebuilding in the support file you sent, and is "Missing two secondary disks". this is a counter only.

If you only have TWO total disks in your mirror volume, just "remove missing secondary disks". If you have 4 total disks, you are fine. If three, connect up the third disk, then "remove missing secondary disks", to reset the counter to the correct number.

OK, thanks for the reply.
Originally it was only a two disk mirror but I added a third. I have done what you said, connected the third disk in and the warning in red now says "missing secondary disk". At what point does that warning disappear? It is still showing after doing "remove missing secondary disk".
So I should now be patient and wait for the rebuild? What "bugs" me is there doesn't seem to be any feedback/progress indicator to tell how much has been done/how much left to go.
Thanks for your time and patience,
Ken

With the three disks connected, then you can "remove missing secondary" and it will set the counter to three, and when one is disconnected, will show missing secondary disk, as a normal indicator. (you have a disk off line)

Rebuilds require the volume to be mounted. If it is not rebuild quickly, change optimization to Workstation, instead of Digital Audio/video. that will greatly speed up rebuilds.

Thanks again for your response.

OK so I have the 3 disks connected and have issued the "remove missing disks" (several times actually) but the "missing secondary disk" is still showing. At what point will that go? Does it remain until the rebuild is finished?

Yes the volume is mounted. In my "ignorance" I left the optimization to what it defaulted to, and that is showing under "Volume optimize for > Server"
Should I leave it as that or change it as you have suggested to "Workstation"?

If you have used the command "remove missing secondary disks", the counter should be set to the number of disks connected at that moment.

quit/relaunch SoftRAID, do this again and see what you get. If you still show a "missing secondary disk" message, then send us a support file to the support email address.

Optimization can be changed at any time, it is normally set to workstation. Server means that rebuilding is given top priority and the volume will rebuild as fast as possible, even if user responsiveness is a little slow as a result. Workstation rebuilds about 50% speed, so user response is essentially normal.

I will send the report.
With the volume selected the only options available in the Volume drop-down menu are: New, Unmount, Enable Safeguard, and Optimize for ...
I have attached a screenshot in case it may of any help.
Thanks for the explanation about Optimization, I'll leave it as Server, in that case.

the other options are not available during a rebuild. We are looking at your support file.

I just want to do the right thing and close off this thread for those who might come after and wonder what happened.
First I would like to say that the response from SoftRAID went "above and beyond". Thanks everyone who helped (you know who you are).
In the end it remained an unresolved mystery and the solution was to "nuke" the volume and start afresh with a new Mirrored RAID.
