It would be helpful if SoftRAID included a guided troubleshooting assistant whenever a RAID volume is detected but fails to mount.
The assistant could automatically check common issues such as:
- Missing or outdated SoftRAID driver
- File system errors
- Disk health and SMART status
- RAID consistency
- macOS permissions or security settings
- Connection or enclosure issues
Rather than simply showing that the volume cannot be mounted, SoftRAID could explain the likely cause and recommend the safest next step. For example, it could suggest verifying the RAID, reinstalling the driver, checking cables, or contacting support before attempting repairs that might risk data.
This would make troubleshooting much easier, especially for users who aren't familiar with interpreting SoftRAID status messages, and could reduce unnecessary support requests.
Lets tackle your points:
- Missing or outdated SoftRAID driver
The SoftRAID driver can never be "missing" or out of date. Its a privileged driver in MacOS. - File system errors
SoftRAID is not meant to be a volume repair tool. And I admit MacOS is horrible at file system issues, no repair tools, no real warning on issues. The only real diagnostic tool that is useful is Disk Warrior. We do not "promote" Disk Warrior, despite its value, as it is a third party app from us and only supports HFS still. But for HFS volumes, its a very useful utility for all macOS HFS volumes, not just SoftRAID. - Disk health and SMART status
Those are always present and SoftRAID Monitor alerts you when there is a status problem with health. - RAID consistency
The Only RAID "consistency" issue you will run into is "out of sync", "rebuilding", or "failed". All are alerted with Monitor and email if you have notifications set up. There is no case where you need to check the "consistency." SoftRAID volumes always track its "consistentcy" and if there is potential issue, will either rebuild, or mark the volume as "failed', so you can take action. - macOS permissions or security settings
SoftRAID is not involved with this ever. That is for Disk Warrior, or perhaps TechTool Pro. - Connection or enclosure issues
When there is a possible connection issue, what happens are disks eject in most cases, and we alert you.
We cannot easily detect the difference between and IO caused by a faulty enclosure, or a file system error, but we point it out.We have a ton of FAQ's here:
https://software.owc.com/knowledge-base/
We update them and if there are requests for new ones, we can create them for you.and there is online help, which is dated, but very helpful, as every dialog box has a ? for getting help.
The problem with building "wizards" is there are a lot of variables and generally a SoftRAID support file is needed, with a human eyeball, for a correct diagnose of issues.
