Subject: Alerts for excessive packets/sec

I'm using SoftRAID 5.5.

The SoftRAID provides means for Emailing alerts for certain thresholds being exceeded. One such alert is for "High network traffic detected" and the threshold is by default 1000 packets/sec for more than 1 hour.

My questions here are

1) Does the 1000 mean at any time during an hour the packets/sec reached or exceeded 1000 ?

2) Does the 1000 mean the average packets/sec calculated for an hour ?

I ask as I set this threshold per its default of 1000 and found I received an Email alert that coincided with my Apple's Time Machine backup via ethernet to my Apple's TC 802.11ac.

When I monitor the packets/sec when my Time Machine backup is running I see at times the packets/sec can exceed 50,000 for brief periods of time.

Any advice about this type of alert is welcomed.

Thanks....

The check is performed at the frequency specified in the "Alarms" tab of the Email Notification window. Every check, the total number of packets since the last check is calculated and that number is converted to packets/sec. If that number is over the threshold, and email is sent.
