I have a RAID 5 set that lost a disk. No big deal, I'll just pop another one in and rebuild. Hmmm....doesn't seem to be working.
If I try to mount the degraded volume, it says 'mounting', then nothing happens.
But, if I add the new, blank drive and try to rebuild the volume, it tells me that the volume needs to be mounted first.
So, how can I rebuild if the volume is unmountable?
If I look in the logs, attempts to mount cause me to see the following:
diskarbitrationd[71]: unable to repair /dev/disk22 (status code 0x00000008).
I've tried DiskWarrior on the volume, but it immediately gives up:
The directory of the disk “VideoRAID” cannot be rebuilt. The original directory is too severely damaged. The disk was not modified. If you report this error, please mention the error code (2155, 2213 : 1972).
So, I'm stuck with 25TB of data that I can't access....
What if you remove the newly added disk and restart and run Disk Warrior again? Disk Warrior is the best at repairing damaged volumes. Let us know.
No dice. Same error messages. Something has royally screwed up the file system. There have been no power outages or anything of the sort. The only thing that I'm aware of is that one of the disks was reporting errors. That disk doesn't show any failures in SMART and tested OK using two different disk testing packages. I'm baffled.

Ugh, this just keeps getting better and better. After I removed the recently added (and blank) disk from the volume, I cannot add it back in. The volume no longer has an entry in /dev and DiskWarrior sees it as seven separate drive of [unrecognized format].
Only a year's worth of work.....what's one year? :-)
Don't try to add the disk back. You are in a fragile situation, so don't try anything without it being suggested from us specifically.
The only thing to try at this point is:
Shut down.
remove the disk you just replaced. Do NOT try to "add it back". Set it aside until this is resolved.
Restart.
Wait at least 10 minutes and see if the volume can mount. (sometimes it can take a while for fsck to run on a damaged volume)
Try Disk warrior again if it cannot mount.
An option in Disk Warrior is to "option rebuild", which is scavenge mode. See if that can help.
If there is no volume bsd number in the volume tile in SoftRAID, send us a Tech support file from softraid to support@softraid.com
Physically removed the new disk. Rebooted and waited. The Volume now has a BSD number again. Scavenge rebuild in DiskWarrior gave the same result and error codes.

Send us a Tech support file. We can look further. I don't know why Disk warrior cannot recover this, it should be able to.
Any update on this issue?
I don't think you sent a support file to us, did you?
email it to support@softraid.com
I did, but I'll send another one.
Any update on this issue?
Hi bsom
did you have any update on this issue?
I have exactly the same problem with my 9tb RAID 5.
It becomes a BIG problem when I updated the SoftRAID driver, which updated the 5.5.5 SoftRAID driver in the system folder. After restart, I noticed that several folders on my volume were empty. After another restart, thinking it could be some kind of solution, the volume is unmountable and SoftRAID shows total capacity of 9TB free in the volume.
Diskwarrior has not solved.. Error code 2155, 2213 : 1972
Still waiting for diskwarrior support to make something to solved this issue.
Very frustrating it happen just after update SoftRAID software/driver...
Keep in touch if we have a solution to that.
