This may be a rookie question; if it is, I apologize. I'm learning as I go.
I use a number of different external drives, and I've noticed that some of them supply me with SMART status and hours of use, while others do not.
I haven't had to think about it until today, when one of my drives began failing.
My question is: is there a reason that two of my drives would supply this data while three of them do not?
The drives that do show SMART status are my internal HDD and an external SSD (on which the OS is installed) connected via Thunderbolt.
The drives which do not show SMART status are
-An OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual, set up as RAID 0, connected via Thunderbolt
-A generic enclosure with a single 3TB drive, connected via FireWire 800
-An OWC Thunderbay 4, set as RAID 5 via SoftRAID, connected via Thunderbolt
I'm hoping I can catch things like this before they happen next time. Any help is greatly appreciated.

FireWire does not transmit SMART data over the bus.
Mercury Elite in RAID mode will not transmit SMART data.
The Thunderbay 4 will display SMART status on each disk, and report when a disk has a problem.

So what about USB Sticks? I have a brand new 32GB Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 and not only it doesn't give any SMART status, but it is also telling me this disk is likely to fail real soon.
Thing is, it's barely used. thoughts?

I realized after I posted that the Thunderbay does, in fact, show SMART status.
Thank you for the quick answer!
If a thumbdrive shows failure soon, it is because it had an error. Try certify on it (3 passes) and then watch to see if it is reliable.
