Hello - I'm on a 2013 MacPro with 11.11.6.

I have a LaCie 5Big Thunderbolt that I keep partitions on that include ready-to-clone base OS X operating systems. I do IT work.

So there are partitions with bootable versions like 10.7.5, 10.8.x, up to 10.11.5

I want to run the 10.11.6 Installer to update the last to the current OS El Cap version but cannot boot from that partition.

When I run SoftRaid 5.5 it immediately tells me I need to update the driver. So I click the update, give it my OS X admin info but it fails with the following info from the Log file.

Aug 4 16:09:01 - SoftRAID Tool: Installing the SoftRAID driver on the volume "10.11.5 Clone" (disk5).
Aug 4 16:09:02 - SoftRAID Tool: The driver install command for volume "10.11.5 Clone" (disk5) failed with an error (error number = 10).

I've searched for both
"Softraid error 10"
"Softraid driver install command failed"
and find nothing.

Please advise.

thank you

Try this:

Boot from the Mac Pro. Click on the clone volume in SoftRAID.
"uninstall SoftRAID driver"
"install SoftRAID driver"
then option boot to the clone volume.

Does that work?

SR-Support - thank you for the quick reply. (Interesting I only got an SR email that my thread was approved after moderation - and that only on 11-Aug!)

Anyway - I've tried the Uninstall / Install as suggested and same message.

I recall (now) that this RAID may have been created originally under Apple's Disk Utility and OS X 10.9.x so I am now backing it up to an 8TB external.

Then I'll reformat / partition with SoftRaid and try the steps again.

thx
qb

(Apologies if this shows up as a repeat - I typed a reply and Posted but now I don't see it.)
I have now tried the Uninstall / Install of the SR driver to no avail. The Install gives the same error as my attempt to Update.

I also now believe the original RAID was done using Apple's Disk Utility and OS X 10.9.x. Perhaps that is the root of the problem.

My next step is to backup everything to an 8TB drive and use SR to reformat / repartition from scratch.

Then I'll test and update this thread.

thank you
qb

That is unlikely to have caused this. This is more likely some kind of ownerships/permissions issue, where SoftRAID is unable to get full access to the folders it needs to install SoftRAID components into.

here is a try. Use this beta version. It makes one change that may help SoftRAID install when there is a problem with Mavericks.

I am a new SoftRaid user. I have a Mac Pro 2009 (with 2010 firmware) and several AppleRaid mirror sets. I just "upgraded" from 10.9.5 Mavericks to 10.11.6 El Capitan and as a result of losing a decent Disk Utility I am trying SoftRaid. I just installed the V5.5 download with the V5.0.9 driver and have the same problem as quattlebaum. The updated SoftRaid driver install fails with error 10.

I downloaded the beta and an trying that now.

Or you can boot from another 10.11 volume and "uninstall SoftRAID driver" on that volume, then reinstall it.

Sometimes ownerships are wonky and SoftRAID application cannot write to the Applications Support folder.

Let us know if you have issues.

The beta version V5.5.5b17 fixed the problem. When I said "OK" to the dialog for upgrading the driver it came back and asked my admin password, which I gave, and then it successfully completed.

This was happening on any drive partition that had a bootable macOS system, in my case, I had 10.9.5 and 10.11.6 startups.
