[Sticky] Monterey Crash/kernel panics

No uninstalling does not help, as it is a macOS/M1 bug, not a SoftRAID bug.

Just a quick update. When I took out one of the drives, softraid would still mount the volumes which is why I think it would still panic and crash, so I took out 2 drives so that It couldn't mount. That way, I was able to plug in and wait 5 minutes. After that, I inserted the drives and then It's working again. Softraid said the volumes were out of sync so rebuilt them both and now I have a stable working system again. 

One of the volumes is an APFS Time Machine volume and that has never worked without kernel panics, so I've unmounted that volume and leave it unmounted. I wonder if that was the cause. Anyway. Its working for now. Hurry up Mac OS Ventura!

Very weird result. Happy, however.

I'm new here; running into a kernel crash as well.

I've got a 2021 MacBook Pro, 16 inch with the M1 chip set, running Monterey 12.6.  The 24 TB ThunderBay 4 that I had ordered from Amazon arrived yesterday and I've been trying to get this up and running as a Time Machine backup disk.  Here's what's happened thus far:

• After making the changes described on https://www.softraid.com/docs/softraid-quick-start-guide/installation-macos/completing-softraid-installation/, making sure that I've got the current version of SoftRAID (6.3) installed and entering the license key to allow the RAID-5 functionality to be enabled, I plugged the system into the machine, went into Time Machine Preferences and selected the new disk as a replacement.  It drops into a "preparing disk" window; progress bar gets about halfway across and stays there.
• The "SoftRAID Known Issue" page suggests that Time Machine requires the disk to be formatted as APFS.  That's not directly available in the supported version of SoftRAID, so after several false starts I manage to get it converted through Disk Utility.  Time Machine backup now starts.  After about an hour the machine crashes.  Retry; crashes again.
• Switch Time Machine back to original disk, investigate some more.  The "SoftRAID Known Issues" page also mentions changing striping unit size to 64K.  I can't find any description on how to accomplish this, so continued searching.
• Find this Forums site and the suggestion to install beta version (v 7.0 b18).  Did so.  Start Time Machine on new disk, crash.

It was already getting into the wee small hours of the morning by now and I'm still a bit sleep deprived so there might be some additional things I tried but didn't include here.  Or steps that I should have taken but didn't know about.

The Tech Support log is attached.  I had saved the problem report to a text file and attempted to attach that but for some reason I'm getting messages about "error: filetype not allowed" both with and without a ".txt" suffix on it so the copy-and-paste follows.

I don't see the tech support report that I thought I had attached to the previous; attaching here.

Also: a message on the previous screen mentions "the dreaded DART panic".  Is that what I'm running into here?  If so, "wait 5 minutes" after what?  Start a backup five minutes after I've booted or switched the Time Machine disk back to the new one?

Disconnect the enclosure when restarting and wait until 5 minutes after startup to connect the drives. that usually avoids this.

Ventura is released next week it appears, which will hopefully eliminate this problem for everyone.

Rebooted, waited about 10 minutes before reconnecting the enclosure.  TimeMachine ran for about 6m45s, then crashed again.

Should I try changing the striping size to 64KB? How do I go about doing that?

Wait until Ventura next week. that should fix it, but yes you can change to 64k. Make the volume APFS, and do not "encrypt" the volume.

@softraid-support I tried that, also pasting into emacs instead; couldn't attach the text file.  The form was giving messages about "error: filetype not allowed" both with and without a ".txt" suffix. 

I'll wait for Ventura and see what happens.

You have to select "Make plain text" or it saves as RTF, regardless of what you think you are naming it.

I did.  I had also skipped using Text Edit altogether for the second crash and used emacs to create that text file.  This page still rejected that.

I also upgraded to Ventura last night and started the backup. It crashed on the same basic issue.  I'll look for or create a topic for that.

The good news is that the upgrade fixed something so that I can now attach the txt file.  So that's something at least.

Just updated to SoftRAID 7.0.1, then upgraded to Monterey 12.6.2. Ran a Carbon Copy Cloner backup, attempted to eject my Thunderbay 4, hard freeze.

With 7.0 out and Ventura, has the hard freeze / kernel pnic issue been solve on Thunderbolt with M1 Macs ?

Only in part. 7.0.1 and Ventura 13.1 get closer. However in testing, we discovered we can easily reproduce the panic with Time Machine.

We have reported it and are still pushing for a 100% fix.

@softraid-support I have no plans on using my PWC RAID 5 drive as a TM drive ... is the issue still present even if I use a "regular" drive for TM?
