I just built a new RAID 5 system using Softraid. Thunderbay 4 unit with four 18TB Toshiba N300 Pro drives. I certified the hard drives. That took four days. I then set up the volume for RAID 5 and I optimized it for Digital Video when given the choice by Softraid. After that I was given two choices for Stripe unit size. 16kb was recommended by Softraid. The other choice was 64kb but it said that would only benefit me if I was on a Windows machine, but I am on a Mac M1 Studio machine. So I stuck with 16kb. I was not offered any other choices such as 128kb or 256kb. I know very little about all this stuff but I am good at following instructions. 16kb seems like a low number. Will this be OK for this system?
yes, 16K is fine, as reads are actually 64K with 4 disks. It has the advantage of not wasting allocated stripe unit IO's (being too large) and performs great.
