rebuilding, waiting for mount

I have 4 x 4TB WD SSDs in an Express 4M2, with SoftRAID 8.3 (driver 8.2) under OS X 18.2, RAID 5, on an M3 MacBook Pro. The RAID volume is encrypted with FileVault.

While I was working, SoftRAID notified me that one of the drives had "gone away". When I started the SoftRAID app, only 3 drives were visible.

I restarted the laptop. SoftRAID showed all 4 drives as healthy with no errors, but the volume is reported as "degraded - safeguard disabled". Underneath is "no errors - rebuilding, waiting for mount" and "current offset: 242,221,056". The offset has not changed since I opened SoftRAID.

The OWC tech support person that I spoke to said that the drive will mount once the rebuild has completed. However, in this post, SoftRAID Support writes "If the volume cannot mount, it cannot rebuild", so I'm unclear on the sequence: do I need to try to mount the drive to allow the rebuilding to take place, or do I wait for the rebuilding to take place so that the drive can mount?

A volume cannot rebuild unless it is mounted.

this is unfortunate. You may need to run Disk Drill, or R-Studio to recover, if the data on this volume is not backed up fully.

You can try connecting to a different computer, as a test, sometimes MacOS can "repair" a directory from a different system, its worth a try.

Thanks for your help.

I mounted the volume using Disk Utility, and it mounted without problems. I then immediately got a message saying that the volume had been successfully repaired and was working without problems. SoftRAID shows all the volumes as healthy.

I think you may need to update your in-app messaging and also your FAQ to make it clear that volumes must be mounted to rebuild, otherwise users who run into this issue might -- like me -- will wait indefinitely for a rebuild that never happens. As far as I can tell, there's nothing in the FAQ at all about the "rebuilding" state, and the messages shown in the SoftRAID app are ambiguous ("rebuilding, waiting for mount" does suggest that the app is actively rebuilding, and that mounting will happen later, whereas in fact it's not rebuilding at all, it's just waiting).

You probably also need to review the docs being used by the OWC frontline support staff. OWC support is usually excellent, but the person I spoke to yesterday told me "Once the rebuild is complete, it will automatically mount. So no, you do not need to mount it. in fact it will not mount ... Just let it keep working. It will mount later once the rebuild is complete."

That seems to be almost the exact opposite of the way things actually work.

@angusm

I will remind the staff on this issue. They should know.
I will look into documentation.

I am surprised Disk Utility repaired/mounted your volume, if it did not auto mount. Its repair tool is pretty limited!
