Feature Request-Add visual partition map
One of the big limitations with SoftRAID is the ability to see where partitions reside on a drive. The problem becomes apparent when you are deleting and adding volumes or resizing volumes as you try to re-organize data. If you do not know where the partitions are located and therefore how much room you actually have to work with and where, it can be challenging to perform these tasks.
At the moment, the only way to view this is to rely on third party tools. Disk Utility allows you to see the partitions BUT does not display the Volume names associated with those volumes in the same view, so it is a challenging exercise to figure it out, unless you keep and maintain a manual record somewhere. One tool I have found that works well is Drive Genius (I'm sure there are others), but who wants to pay for another tool just for this feature?
I propose a simple but hopefully effective solution to this. In the list of Volumes in SoftRAID, provide an option to show the order of partitions...which can be done with 2 simple steps:
- sort the Volume names in the order they appear on the drive
- add a placeholder for any unused space/partitions on the drive
So, this feature could be easily toggled on and off.
This would go a long way to making managing partitions easier and would be unobtrusive on the UI.
Way back with SoftRAID 2.x, we had a separate partitions tab. We removed it with version 3, as users were confused.
I have advocated for some return of this ability, hopefully with version 6, as we indend to update the UI quite a bit.
Yes I recall that partitions tab. I have LONG missed that tab. Hopefully SOME similar functionality will return. Thanks.
