Hi, I'm creating a new Raid 1 mirrored volume with two identical hard drives, and there's a "max size" button when specifying the volume size.
I've read that drives from different manufacturers could have slightly different number of sectors. Some people have reported that replacing a faulty drive in a RAID with one from a different manufacturer doesn't work because the replacement drive is a bit too small, so they recommend creating RAID volumes that are slightly smaller the max size of their drives.
Just wondering if the "max size"button uses up all sectors on the drive, or if the max size function just creates volume of a rounded off defined size that all drive manufacturer/models with the same capacity would supply. For example, the drives I have are 10TB, and if I click "max size", does it create a volume that is exactly 10TB in size, and any additional "extra" sectors on the drive are left unused?
Thanks so much for your help.
the Max Size will create the maximum available size based on your disks. If the two are different sizes, then the smaller is used.
I would not worry. SoftRAID also allows you to shrink the volume slightly if need be.
