I have a ThunderBay 4 (16TB) setup as RAID 1+0. Is there an easy way to (one by one) replace all four 4TB disks with 6TB disks and then expand the volume to be 12TB?

Yes we support this, one by one replace the disks, let it rebuild. then you can resize volume when all done.

Make sure your volume is in good health, and stop if it ever doesn't mount.

I'm getting ready to do the same thing with my raid.

I've got a RAID 5 4TB (4drive set) that I'm going to upgrade to 4 8TB drives.

Is the process as simple as.

1. Shutdown raid (Mac Pro Cheese Grater - in my case)
2. Pull Drive 1 out.
3. Replace with new sized drive
4. Boot RAID back up.
5. When it chimes in that the raid needs to be rebuilt, this is the time to format the new drive and add it as a member of the Raid set an let it rebuild.
6. Repeat until all drives are finished.

Are these the correct steps?
thanks

also, I'd like to add make sure your raid is connected to a UPS. Where I live in Los Angeles, we have blackouts every now and then for a minute or so and boy it would terrible if you lost power during a rebuild.

While we recommend you also certify new disks, your process is mostly correct, except for a few missing steps:

You need to "initialize" each drive with SoftRAID after installing it and "Add disk" to let it rebuild.
Make sure your volume is mounted at each step. If it is not mounted when you replace a disk, stop and contact us.
when you have replaced all disks, then you need to "resize volume" to take advantage of the extra capacity.

Hello,

I have a similar question like the previous person.

I am using a RAID5 with 4x6TB disks.

If I ever plan on adding bigger disks, do I need to replace all 4 "in a row" I mean, all together? Or can I change the first disk, go through all the steps, use it and replace the next one months later? I am asking, because buying 4x8-12TB disks is really expensive if you buy them all together!

Thanks in advance!

Yes you can replace them at your convenience, there is no problem using SoftRAID with different disk sizes. The only issue is the extra space is not available on your volume until you replace all the disks and are able to "resize" the volume.
