Can't 'erase' to APFS

I'm trying to 'erase' a 4-ssd (RAID4) disk but the only option it gives me for the filesystem is HFS+.  It was originally formatted (via SoftRAID) as APFS. Why can't I choose to keep it as APFS? Is this just a bug?

We do not support this at this time, as there is a different structure on APFS volumes.

Easiest is delete the volume and recreate it.

Would it be possible that rather than not make an option available that would otherwise be expected to be present in SoftRIAD (reformat, erase, etc) to instead allow selecting the option but when you go to execute, present an error message that this feature is currently not supported, and present an alternative to performing the task, as in this case, "...delete the volume and create it"?

Its in the mix for 8.1. APFS is complex and we are slowly adding full support. Some things get dropped in the deadlines to release, as you can imagine!

@softraid-support Thanks for the reply. I was just making the suggestion as a general principle that if a expected feature is not available, because it is not ready, that rather than not make it visible, to instead alert the user of this fact when they try to use that feature, and at the same time present a work-around or alternative. Just food for thought.

Just to round this out a bit, for those of us running SoftRAID 8 on Sonoma, what is the recommendation for preexisting RAID4 APFS volumes created with SSDs?  Any danger in leaving them as-is for the time being?  This is the first I'm hearing that I'm running an unsupported config.

@dmetz

You are OK, I don't know how you get the inference it is an unsupported configuration.

SoftRAID Cannot "erase" an APFS volume was the discussion. You can delete/create a new volume, or use Disk Utility to erase as APFS.

What I recommend with all flash, however, is "validate" the volume occasionally.

I think it was your follow-up comment about the complexities of APFS, and 'not supported' that got me.  Apologies for derailing the topic.
