I have a 4 disk Thunderbay with 8TB drives. It was functioning fine but I wanted to see if I could track down what was causing excessive drive noise (subtle, annoying whine) and restarted the enclosure 4 times, with one drive removed at a time, to see if I could isolate the noise to just one drive. I guess this messed up the parity on the drives and now it is marked as Degraded and rebuilding, current offset 528,482,304.

How long should this take and should I be ok? The disk won't let me write to it while this is happening, is that expected behavior? I think Mac OS did this, it gives an error message when the computer is restarted that the disk cannot be repaired and is read only.

As for the rebuild, there doesn't seem to have any indication that it is proceeding. I set the drive optimization to server. Does SoftRaid need to be open (besides being in menu bar) to be rebuilding or does this happen in the background?

I am running softraid 5.5.5 and MacOS 10.12.3

And for those wondering, I guess these drives are just noisy. It's a different noise than normal drive head clicking. I think it's related to the platters spinning.

The problem is (most likely) the volume is not mounting, (or is mounting read only). So it cannot rebuild until the volume is repaired.

Disk Warrior can repair the volume damage.
