Is 64k stripe size the only working option for RAID5 on Apple Silicon with v7 as well?

@softraid-support

Over the weekend, I backed up my system, did a complete wipe of the internal drive, and did a completely clean reinstall of my OS.

So far, this seems to have resolved the issues I was having. I was able to reconnect the Drobo and complete the file transfer. I've been gradually re-adding the things I need on the computer. Hopefully whatever interaction was causing the instability won't be a further issue.

I deliberately avoided re-installing any Drobo software this time, since the OS can still read the drive. Given that the crashes were FireWire related, I strongly suspect that the Drobo's software was a likely culprit, even without the Drobo attached. While I tried to remove the software prior to the wipe, I'm not certain I got it completely removed from the computer.

My ultimate intent is to either retire the Drobo, or replace the fan in it and relegate it to being a secondary mass backup.

@softraid-support I've started a new thread, since I think my problem isn't necessarily about the 16k vs 64k issue.

It seems the problems I'm having now are specifically wake-from-sleep related.

@  eMouse

Is this still the hang issue?
If so,  post the activity Monitor results here.

Is the 16k vs 64k issue resolved in 7.5? I don't see it in the release notes so I'm guessing not, but would like to confirm.

EDIT: I seldom post without an edit.

@rexbinary

Its a Applie Silicon issue, not SoftRAID, so the fix will come from MacOS. However, several users have reported that in 13.4 beta, it is fixed. So a fix is on the horizen. User testing will be required to know if 100% or not, of course.

URGENT: So I'm back again. My video editor upgraded to an M1 Ultra Mac Studio a few months ago. He is using a 128 GB Thunderbay 8 with the 16 KB stripe unit size. He's running SoftRAID 7.5 on Ventura 13.2.1.  He has had no kernel panics at all until today. When he tries to edit in Davinci Studio today, he gets the pink flash on the screen and then the computer shuts off and reboots with the attached error report log. If this is the same kernel panic, why is he only having crashes when editing in Davinci but he has no crashes at all when editing in Final Cut Pro? When this was happening to me on my Thunderbay 4, my Mac Studio would crash within 30 seconds of booting. His only crashes when trying to edit in Davinci Studio. Is this the same DART panic we're waiting for a fix from Apple on or is there something else going on?

We tried waiting 5 minutes after booting and also removing one of the drives and reconnecting it after 5 minutes but it still crashes after editing in Davinci for a minute or two.

We are in the middle of a large project so we'd be grateful for your response as soon as possible. Thank you very much.

@midihead7

Is he on 13.3?

This is the DART panic. I think it is triggered by large amounts of small I/O's. So yes that could trigger it, but I do not know why it is not happening the normal way.

Is your friend interested in installing the 13.4 beta? That would be fantastic to confirm or deny that 13.4 fixes his scenario.

He is on 13.2.1.

I was reading in the Blackmagic forums of people having this same exact issue when only editing on Davinci on an M1 Mac running SoftRAID. The conversations come back to this same issue between the Apple bug and SOftRAID.

We would be willing to try the beta of Mac OS 13.4 if there is a good possibility of it fixing the issue and as long as there are no other major bugs that might interfere with our editing workflow. How do I get the beta? I'm not an app developer so I'm not sure if I need to register as a developer anyway to get the beta. Is there another way to get the 13.4 beta?

Unless policy is changed, I do not think you need a paid developer account to access the beta versions. YOu do need an Apple ID, so give it a try. There will be some non disclosures, etc to acknowledge, etc, but I think you can get it.

go here:

https://developer.apple.com/macos/

and on the bottom of the page access X-Code and MacOS beta versions.

I figured out how to enroll in the public beta software program. The process to get public betas just changed yesterday apparently. I have installed the 13.4 beta and just need my editor to test out Davinci in a little while. I'll give you an update soon. Thanks.

Really looking forward to it. If you still get a panic, we can capture a core dump and get it to Apple engineering to investigate.

So far, my editor has been doing typical editing on Davinci Studio today and his Mac Studio has not crashed at all yet on Mac OS 13.4 beta. Davinci seemed a bit laggy at first but I'm thinking that his Mac was still doing the "Optimizing your Mac" thing that it does after bigger Mac OS updates. The lagging seems to have gone away earlier so that seems OK now. I'll keep you posted if it panics but will also give an update after a few more days if things are still working fine so that you know that this really worked. So far, so good. Thanks!

Since installing the Ventura 13.4 beta, my editor's Mac Studio Ultra has never had another DART crash with the Thunderbay 8 connected so I'd say 13.4 fixes the issue. One issue I do seem to have now is that since the official version of Ventura 13.4 was just released a few days ago, trying to install the official 13.4 doesn't seem to progress with the installation (it won't proceed to restart to proceed with the installation). The Mac Studio previously downloaded the official 13.4 update in the background. I then went in and opted out of the beta program, I clicked click the "Details…" button next to "This Mac is enrolled in the Apple Beta Software Program." A dialog appeared asking if I would like to restore my default update settings. I chose "Restore Defaults". When I then try to restart the Mac using the restart button, it shows a blue progress bar but the progress doesn't seem to move forward after sitting there for at least 15 minutes. The progress bar doesn't appear to move from the beginning after waiting at least that long. If I try to only install ONLY the latest firmware update for his Mac Studio Display, it does the same thing and won't progress past the very beginning of the progress bar. Do you have any suggestions other than restoring the Mac back to the original 13.4 shipping software ( https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/restore#macos )? Or do you think I just need to wait longer for the Mac to proceed?

What version of MacOS is running. (about this mac, click on 13.4, and it will show a build number.)
