I have a Flex 8 and various thunderbays (some TB2, some TB3). All using RAID5 and generally well behaved.

I'm currently running 5.8.4 XT on a 2018 Intel Mac Mini. I'm contemplating on getting a Windows desktop again, so Windows 11.

- Will these enclosures work with USB4 please

- I would upgrade to the current Softraid XT or Pro. Would these RAID5 volumes work just the same on Windows as they have for me on MacOS please?

- Are there any known differences to running OWC enclosures with softraid RAID5 volumes that I should be aware of please?

Cheers

When you install SoftRAID for Windows, just move the volumes over.

No they will not work with USB 4, that is USB, the USC-C connector will be the same, but USB is a subset of Thunderbolt, not the other way around, So get a workstation with built in Thunderbolt 3.

Don't buy Pro for this.

Thanks for that. I guess the money saved from not buying Pro will need to be spent on MacDrive?

@chobochobo

If you are permanently moving your enclosure to windows, you do not need to buy anything extra. Your license will work on SoftRAID Windows.

Cheers, I'm using 5.8.4 XT with Catalina at the moment. So I will need to buy new SR to move up windows?

It seems that my laptop (lenovo yogo book 9i) has 3 TB4 ports. They are all the same right?

@chobochobo

5.8.4 is old enough there is no upgrade path. You r Flex 8 came with a license, use that.

There is a new version for Windows coming in a couple weeks, also

So I found my SR license on my Flex (right on the most awkward spot) - I can install them on a Windows machine? My current volumes are Mac OS extended journaled, so I would need MacDrive to read them from Windows machine?

My current plan is to keep the Softraid RAID 5 volumes hooked up to my mac mini with 5.

Sorry, somehow, part of the reply was not sent.

My current plan is to keep the Softraid RAID 5 volumes hooked up to my mac mini with 5.8.4 but install a newer XT from the Flex license on my windows machine so that they can access them if necessary. Is that single new XT license only for one computer please? If I can install on one windows and one macos then I would upgrade the mac version too, whilst upgrading the OS also.

@chobochobo

For now, just install SoftRAID on the mac, then "deactivate" your license.

then install onto windows and use on Windows. To go back and forth, you can activate and deactivate. But if all you need is temporary access on one system or the other, your volume will mount, even if the volume is deactivate.

With SoftRAID 8, due soon, there will be more options.

@chobochobo

Yes. You can also install SoftRAID onto your windows machine. If this is occasionale, use a Standard license. If permanent, just move your license (deactivate on the mac).

You should not have any issues, as long as your Windows machine has true Thunderbolt, if this is a Thunderbolt enclosure. If USB, it should work fine.

I've had the Flex 8 for a while but never used this serial as I was using old serials (I'm using XT 5.8.4 on my 2018 mac mini)
