Hello -
I have a couple of OWC RAID volumes that I want to convert to SoftRAID, each with 4 HDDs. Is the only way to do this is to reformat the volume and restore from a backup?

The formatting on hardware RAID disks is different, so it is difficult to convert hardware RAID to software.
So the short reply is yes, you need to backup, convert your enclosure to "JBOD", then you can initialize the disks and create a new volume for your data.
