I have an existing large volume (with a large amount of data) that I would like to pair with another equal size volume to create a RAID 1 pair. Is it possible to do this without erasing the data? I don't currently have a third volume large enough to move the data to.

Also, the two volumes are in separate enclosures. Will this create a problem or is this a bad idea?

You can convert the volume to SoftRAID format.
Then initialize the second disk.
"Convert to Mirror" and it will create a mirror in the background.

Enclosures do not matter, as long as they are reliable.
