softraidtool help lists an "addisk" command for volumes, but all my attempts to use it have given syntax errors. Is there an example of it being used?

... and is it indeed "addisk" like in the help, or is it "adddisk" ? I tried that too.

What kind of volumes can have disks added to them? Is it only possible to add entire drives, or can volumes be added? What is the effect of adding a disk to a volume?

Looking around the forum, it sounds that softraid does not support adding a disk to RAID0 because that would require re-doing the striping of all of the data. It also sounds as if softraid does not support adding a disk to RAID5.

I see an Add Disk menu entry for volumes in the GUI, but so far it has always been greyed out for me.

Add disk is only when a disk is missing from the volume. We do not support adding disks to RAID volumes, with the exception of Mirrors, which can have up to 16 disks in a mirror volume.

Is there an example?

For example if I had a non-RAID volume that I wanted to convert to RAID1, how would I addisk (adddisk?)

Take a RAID 5 volume for example. you use removedisk to remove a disk from the volume, then you can use adddisk to add the disk back to the volume.

I was able to use the GUI to add disks to RAID1, but I was looking for examples of the command line use -- a tested example, please, as when I try it just keeps complaining about syntax errors or not knowing the command addisk (or adddisk when I try that.)

A soon to do project in 6.0 is fixing logging, and making command line more helpful and fixing any issues.
