Since there is no dedicated section for RAID 1+0 (vs Stripe only or Mirror only sections), I was inspired by some discussion from this thread to create a thread for all questions and info regarding RAID 1+0:
https://forums.softraid.com/softraid-8-functionality-issues/raid-0-to-raid-10-data-loss
By definition, a RAID 1+0 (aka RAID 10), is a stripe of mirrored drives, as illustrated in a diagram here:
https://www.thegeekstuff.com/2011/10/raid10-vs-raid01/
The intention of this thread is to capture information, not issues or problems.
What are the ways to create a RAID 1+0 volume?
First, you need a minimum of 4 drives, and always in pairs, or increments of 2.
There are 3 ways:
1. create the volume from scratch.
2. convert from a RAID 0 by connecting the extra drives and use the Convert function.
3. convert from an AppleRAID 1+0 using the Convert function.
Can a RAID 1+0 be converted to a RAID 0?
Yes, use the Remove function to remove the extra "mirrored" drives from the volume.
Can a RAID 1+0 be converted to to a RAID 1?
No. SoftRAID cannot do this. But you can do this in multiple steps:
1. remove the extra "mirrored" drives using the Remove function. This will leave you with a RAID 0 configuration.
2. create a RAID 1 using the removed drives. Note the capacity may be different that the original volume, depending on how many drives you remove.
3. Copy the data from the from the RAID 0 to the RAID 1.
Is it possible to convert a RAID 1 to a RAID 1+0?
No. SoftRAID cannot do this directly. The simply way is to create a RAID 0 with the drives, then use the Convert function to convert to a RAID 1+0.
Is it possible to convert to a RAID 1+0 from a RAID 5?
No. SoftRAID cannot do this. You have to use one of the paths listed above, here
@softraid-support Is it possible to convert to a RAID 1+0 from a RAID 4?
I know SoftRAID cannot do this directly, but what if the parity drive was removed, effectively turning the volume into a RAID 0, then using the Convert function (after adding the extra drives)?
@softraid-support Is it possible to resize a RAID 1+0 to a smaller volume?
@softraid-support Is it possible to resize a RAID 1+0 to a larger volume, if there is room on the drives?
@softraid-support Is it possible to increase the capacity of a RAID 1+0 to a larger volume by adding new drives?
@softraid-support With 6 drives or more, there are two possible configurations for a RAID 1+0, either 2 stripes of 3 drives mirrored, or 3 stripes of 2 drives mirrored. Does SoftRAID support both configurations?
@softraid-support When a drive in a RAID 1+0 fails:
1. what are you left with?
2. Are all the remaining good drives still being used, i.e. the partial stripe still continues to be mirrored?
3. What gets rebuilt when the failed drive is replaced, just that segment or the entire mirror?
Do you want me to consolidate all these into an FAQ? I can put it into our knowedge base info and also post it here? (or a direct link to it)
Sure that sounds good. Whatever you feel would be most beneficial, visible and easily discoverable.
I may have additional follow-up questions, depending on some of the replies, that may also be useful to incorporate.
And in the meantime, if you can reply to the questions here, that would be appreciated.
