How do I configure a portion on a disk to split it for RAID volume in my four drive bay system? I was advised to set up a 4 drive array and I have3 500GB drives to which I would add a fourth 500GB drive to make an array. The slowest/oldest of these would be the parity array. Using SSD drive and RAID 4 config.

I should think that I can create a partition in SoftRAID. But can't find how to partition the disk there.

Another question: How do convert a disk back to normal use in MacOS? Just initialize it in Disk Utility (Mac)? This is for future use should I no longer need the array and just wish to go JBOD.

Thanks!

Macbook Pro 14" Retina 2021 M1 Pro internal 1TB storage, 32GB RAM, MacOS 14.4.1, running v8.0 SoftRAID software; Local RAID drives/enclosures: 4M2 OWC Enclosure with 6TB NMe, RAID4 Storage; two external OWC T3 enclosures (2.5TB online storage) populated with JBOD 6x500GB, EVO SSD, RAID 4 array disks/partitions;

With SoftRAID you do not "partition" disks. Just create volumes.

To create a RAID 4 volume, back up, then initialize all 4 disks, then create a RAID 4 volume. Select the shosen disk to be the parity disk. (You can give it a label so you know which it is in the dialog box that enables you to select the parity disk)

You cannot convert a stripe volume to RAID 4, if that is what you are trying to do.

If you have a non RAID volume you wish to convert to Apple format, just use the convert function.

If you want to 'refresh' it as a new drive for OS X, just use "zero disk". All you need to do is 100 sectors to clean the drive of its partition map, then use Disk Utlility to erase the drive.

You can also initialize it with SoftRAID, create a non RAID volume, then "Convert" to Apple format.
