Hi I have had many OWC enclosures over the years but have seemed to have the most issues with the Softraid the past few years. (Thunderbays causing major power issues with M1 Macs, Thunderbays corrupting 60TB worth of files, etc)

None the less I have a 8bay thunderbay in a raid 0 as recommended by your support as it was less likely to cause disk corruption if the power fails (which was the case with Softraid causing M1 Mac to kernel panic and damaged my 60TB Raid 5.

I currently have 1 disk in my raid 0 showing potential failure signs and need to essentially create an entirely new raid.

My question is: what is the exact raid setup I should be creating for both high bitrate video AND photo files.

When i Followed softraids guide for setting up the raid to be optimized for video (which is the primary use) Ive had TERRIBLE performance when copying files or dealing with a large amount of files. https://forums.softraid.com/stripe-volumes/raid-0-terribly-slow-performance/#post-15009

I have hundreds of thousands of photos and videos i use with this raid and need it to be as fast as possible.

I currently have it optimized for “Workstation” with 128kb stripe unit size in a raid 0 and i get 1300/mb write and 1600/mb read.

I think I am going back to RAID 5 as long as i can have over 1200r/w but really need to know the proper stripe unit size.

@jjsereday

Just use 64k stripe unit size. You need 64k for RAId 5 if you are getting hit with the M1 DART bug (Note: It is confirmed as a Apple Silicon bug, SoftRAID's RAID 5, it's  just SoftRAID is the main trigger for this, not that this information helps users afflicted by this.)
Optimization helps choose strpe unit size on creating a volume, but no difference afterwards.
If you stay with RAID 0, also use 64k. Only if you are exclusively doing video capture is anything larger going to make a difference.

Yes, hardware, software, cabling, and more mediate r/w performance, but just wanted to share my 2cents about a hugely important component. My area power feed is 'dirty' no, it's toxic, and it was bricking enterprise NAS HDD's like they were vinyl, no exaggeration; inline pure sine-wave UPC's were the cure. Now replacing error free drives at 35k-45k hours vs sector damaged drives at 6 to 9 months. I've used Cyberpower UPC's & distribution for years w/ no issues.

@skyward

The most important component is voltage regulation. (Some areas still have issues with surges, but brownouts are far more dangerous these days) We use an equivalent APC R-1200 or so, on every computer/enclosure in our labs. Certainly extends lifespan of everything connected to them.
