Hello:
I have just created a five disk RAID 4 volume. When I was creating this volume I was surprised to see the SoftRaid software recommend that the parity disk should be the slowest disk. That is counterintuitive for me, and I am wondering why??? It would seem to me that - since the parity disk is hit the hardest during write operations - it should be the fastest.
Can someone help me understand this reasoning behind selecting the slowest disk for RAID 4 parity?
By the way, four of my 5 disks are identical, and the fifth disk is quite a bit faster.
Thanks,

Because 80% of overall I/O is reads on most use cases, and this gives you the most theoretical average performance.
