Hello,

I am trying the 30 day trial and wanted to create 2 disk groups on my mac mini (using an USB 3.0 external 8 bay enclosure).

I emptied 4 x 3 TB HDDs and initialised them. So far so good. No errors.

Then I create the disk group (Raid 5) and let it starts.

Then it get so far as to create the disk group but when it tries to format the volume (HFS+) it fails.

This is my log output:

Jun 7 22:10:32 - SoftRAIDTool: Initializing EFI partition on disk5.
Jun 7 22:10:32 - SoftRAIDTool: Initializing EFI partition on disk3.
Jun 7 22:10:32 - SoftRAIDTool: Initializing EFI partition on disk2.

Jun 7 22:10:46 - SoftRAID Tool: Creating the RAID 5 volume named "Storage A" of size 8.19 TB with the following disks: disk5, SoftRAID ID: 06C240DBB5B9FB40, USB3 bus 0, id 0, disk3, SoftRAID ID: 06C240DBB6B8CA00, USB3 bus 0, id 0, lun 0, disk4, SoftRAID ID: 06C240DBB697A180, USB3 bus 0, id 0, lun 0, disk2, SoftRAID ID: 06C240DBB64A1600, USB3 bus 0, id 0, lun 0.
Jun 7 22:10:56 - SoftRAID Tool: The volume create command for volume "Storage A" () failed with an error (error number = 31).

After reading another forum question that seemed similar I tried:

New User
A different Mac (I have access to 3 here)
removing and reinstalling softraid

What am I doing wrong?

TIA

Can you try something? Create a volume, then time how long it takes (to get the error message)?
Are these connected to a USB hub?

Hi!

Thank you for your reply.

It takes 10,9 seconds. The HDDs are in an 8-bay case. No hub, direct USB 3.0.

I also tried:
Any other type of RAID and also Non-Raid via SoftRaid APP
Different HDDs (4x 1 TB)
Different external enclosures
3rd MAC
Reinstalling the HDDs in the Case

Everything I tried resulted in the same error!

Can you try another thing? Create a non RAID volume on one disk. Does that work?

Hi,

As I posted in my last post. That also doesn't work!

Using disk utility to make normal single non raid drives works 100%!!

Here is another test:

After creating the volume look at the volume in SoftRAID. The volume with have a disk number, such as disk6
(Use a volume name with no spaces, you can rename it later)

Assuming it is 6, then use this command in the terminal:

sudo newfs_hfs -J -v NameOfMyNewVolume /dev/rdisk6

VERY IMPORTANT: only change NameOfMyNewVolume to your volume name, and the 6 to the actual volume number. Do not make any other changes to this line.

time how long it takes to create the volume (important!) and let us know the number of seconds it takes.

To mount the volume after the file system has been created, use:

diskutil mount disk6
(where 6 is the volume number in the SoftRAID volumes tile.)

hi,

this doesn't seem to work because i can't find out the rdisk# for the new volume. I have the separate disk# for the 4 drives but the dg1 (name of the raid 5 volume i created in soft raid) doesn't seem to have a disk number.

I also can't find it while looking via terminal: ls /dev/

any ideas??

Thank you for your support!

This shows this is a different problem, the create volume command is failing earlier. Can you send a SoftRAID tech support file to support@softraid.com so we can look?

Hi there, did you find out what the solution was? Im experiencing exactly the same problem trying to create RAID 5 with 4 x 4TB drives. Tried all the same suggestions of fixes to no avail.
