iSCSI disk supported?

Hi,

Just wondering whether iSCSI disks are officially supported? If so, any tips or gotchas I should be aware of?

Just looking to set up a secondary disk for a RAID 1 array for backup purposes and having an iSCSI target as one of the disks means I can make use of spare capacity on a server for backups to a physically secure server without having to physically move disks.

I mirror to a number of different SSDs one at a time via a RAID1 secondary disk so I can keep rolling backups of VMs but only update the changed sectors which extends the life of my SSDs as well as speeds up the backup mechanism as well as allowing me to backup a VM while it's still running. (I shut down the VM before removing the secondary disk however to be safe). Works great with physical disks.

I've been able to successfully set up the target and mirror to it - SoftRaid is currently rebuilding so just thought I'd ask while I was awaiting the rebuild.

Thanks

sco

iSCSI is not a direct connect technology. (Unless there is a "local" driver available that I am not aware of).

SoftRAID only supports direct connect devices, so it probaly won't see an iSCSI device. You can easily check yourself by running SoftRAID on any Mac with an iSCSI drive. if it sees it, yes, SoftRAID will support it. If the drive does not appear in the disks column, then no, SoftRAID does not support it.

Thanks - I used the Starwind initiator and the iSCSI disk appears as a local disk in SoftRaid and I was able to add the disk as a secondary disk. However it failed to rebuild overnight with a couple of IO errors so doesn't look to be reliable enough for SoftRaid's liking. Will use a different mechanism to do the backup to this device.

Cheers
