Hello, if I buy a new SoftRAID 5 license now will I have to pay the full upgrade fee to SR6? Would be nice to know the upgrade plans because I'm currently holding off buying a license

Wish I could be definitive, but I cannot. Until we know when SoftRAID 6 is going to ship, it is premature to mention the "free upgrade" period. So you have to assume that there will be an upgrade until we announce otherwise.

Keep in mind our last "paid" upgrade was 4.x to 5.x, which was nearly 5 years ago, so we do not apply arbitrary upgrade cycles with SoftRAID. When there are major enhancements, we feel it is right to charge for upgrades, else, all the dozens of interim updates are at no charge to users.

So een if you are a border case and purchase close to an upgrade cycle, keep in mind that we offer lots of free updates over a several years period. I think you will get your money's worth in either case.

1. APFS
2. More nested RAID options(ie. RAID 100. But that may be outside the scope of most SoftRAID users)
3. Sure dark mode, why not ;)
4. Ability to use my full version of SoftRAID on my multiple machines rather than the current license setup.

Yikes, I just purchased the full version of SoftRAID so if version 6 is released soon I hope I don't have to pay for it.

The ability to filter the arrangement of disks in the app. I usually have mine named 1-8 etc and have finder set to arrange by name but in SR it seems to be random (I'm sure it's not btw) - the ability to arrange disk by name would be useful and make clicking on the wrong disk less likely.

Maintaining custom drive icons would be nice too I've my different levels of backup all with different icons so in the finder is easy to tell if I'm looking are backup 1, 2 or 3 - in softraid all the disks (especially the ones formatted by SF) all show the same icons. this means I have to be extra careful I'm working on the right disk.

What's the latest in terms of Softraid 6 ship date - we talking into fall or even winter? like wichall I've been holding off the purchase since I don't think I way to pay the $179 and then another 50% after a few months to upgrade. My workaround has been to buy more physicals disks in the interim! At least those I'll get to repurpose when softraid 6 ships!

We cannot predict the ship date until we are close. At present, it is looking like Winter, not fall.

Keep in mind that the last paid upgrade was 2014, so you are getting value for money in any event.

You can put labels on the disks so they are in order. For example TB1-1, TB1-2, etc for one enclosure.

Finder allows you to edit the volume icon. (get info) But OS X now overwrites these with system upgrades. So be prepared to need to reapply them.

APFS is supported in the current beta
We are not adding nested RAID in 6.0. Possibly in later 6.x releases.
Dark Mode is supported in the current 6.0 beta!
We are changing the license functionality somewhat. It should make it easier to move your license around.

Currently, you can install on multiple machines and move your enclosure around, but need to logout/login to release the driver, before reconnecting the enclosure to another computer.

RAID 6 (definitely)
Extensible arrays. (i.e. the possibility to add one or more drives to an existing array. Ideally of any size.)

I guess encrypted APFS volumes and RAID-6 are great features.
Worth upgrading.

However I think I would be also happy with Dark Mode.

Dark Mode will be supported.
(although dark mode seems like a short lived fad. Looks cool, but it reduces readability/useability.)

As someone who has worked in a dark studio the past 20+ years, where ALL professional studio applications have always had "dark mode" (and still do), it's not going away anytime soon :) Perhaps mainstream will even out to 50/50 - even Microsoft is offering dark mode, and a brighter light mode.

In fact, "dark mode" causes far less eye strain in a darkened environment, where most media professionals and nerds/geeks like me spend most of their time. My eyes don't burn nearly as much when staying up very late at night.

Agreed! I am surprised by the mention of "dark mode" as a fad. I'm not sure how critical it is to my macOS workflow, but there have been moments... and of course working in a dark studio environment it would be huge. For me it's huge in my iOS workflow. Allowing me to have apps in dark mode after sundown allows me to mellow out my eyes and be able to use my iPad in darker atmospheres without annoying those around me.

I agree in a video environment. Time will tell for normal consumers. Thanks for the valuable feedback!

I would love the ability to extend Raid10 to 3 stripes. This would allow your RAID10 users to adopt the strategy outlined in your "Best Practices" ("always create mirrors with at least 3 disks").

We already support 6 drive RAID 1+0 volumes.

We just don't allow adding two drives to a 4 drive RAID 1+0

Maybe we will add this at some point, though.
