SoftRaid 7.5, macOS Monterey 12.7.2

Will have to eat it and upgrade to SoftRaid 8 soon. This morning my new Mac Studio comes. But at 3 am in the morning, I was checking something and then this:

Upon connecting the ThunderBay Flex 8, SoftRaid issued a warning that according to the log says:Dec 05 02:57:32 - SoftRAID Application: The get info command for disk disk13, SN: ZC1DZY46, SATA bus 0, id 0, lun 0 (Thunderbolt) hung while reading (offset 209,735,680, i/o block size = 2,322,432). This disk should be replaced immediately.

Lately SoftRaid has been slow and felt clunky and I haven't changed the macOS or implemented any major changes. That's not why I bought a new computer but it didn't hurt.

This error that it hung reading came onscreen, it mounted about half the volumes, and then appeared stuck. I didn't want to eject disks improperly so I tried the OWC Dock Ejector but it didn't eject what volumes had been mounted. I then tried restarting Finder but the computer just hung. I then used the command-option-escape shortcut and attempted to properly "Shut Down" the computer but halfway through the shut down the computer froze. After 10 minutes I pushed the power button off and carefully restarted everything. Bear in mind this is in the middle of the night or very early morning. Not ideal timing to be sorting these things out.

Everything appears 200% fine now. Re-started twice, connected the ThunderBay, volumes all appear, all volumes say "No Errors" and all disks pass the SMART test.

I think the problem was that my computer was loading Davinci Resolve *as* the volumes were mounting so I think it was most likely just a temporary computer freakout.

I'm still going to update my CCC overnight.

As long as the logs show all is fine now is there really anything to be concerned about here? I can attach a log or report if need be. Gut feeling is this is probably fine but had to ask.

And yes, I'll be putting SR8 on the new computer.

Since it hung on reading, try a "validate" volume.
You can also figure out the disk that hung from the log (the serial number is probably shown), and verify just that disk, but validate makes more sense. See if it works, hangs, or what. It will take a while, but you can use the volume while validating.

I already identified the serial number of the disk and which volume it was last night/yesterday morning at 3 am! Thanks to your suggestion I have just completed a validate disk. Successful. The log says: "The Volume "YouTube Themes Overflow" (disk24) validated successfully."

Anything else you'd suggest at this point? Or at this point would you go ahead and keep on using the disk/volume, especially if it's regularly backed up anyhow.

Offloading the data to wipe the disk clean and re-certify the entire disk just to make certain would be entirely overkill.....or would it?

@guitarflex

If the disk reports SMART data (its not USB), then it may be OK. If this happens again, update backups, "remove disk", certify the disk, initialize, "add disk" and add it back. (the volume will work with one disk missing)

So best advice at the moment is keep an eye on it. Its possible it was a sector that fixed itself. had it reallocated a bad sector, the drive would have a status of predicted to fail.

@softraid-support Thanks. To be clear, this particular disk is not even in a RAID setup. I juggle a lot of data and often use single-disks for immediate short-term use. Then the on/off-site and RAID solutions for archival.

What does "it's not USB" refer to? The disk is in the ThunderBay Flex 8 connected over Thunderbolt.

@guitarflex

the USB comment meant USB drives do not have SMART checks, so you cannot tell about predicted failure on USB disks.

The only difference is you need to backup if you want to certify the disk, as the certify process wipes all data.

separate issue that requires no support but SoftRaid finally gave me scientific and validated data tonight that eliminated all question marks. A CFast 2.0 card for a BlackMagic Design camera had become wonky and wasn't being recognized by the camera. Loaded the card into the reader and opened SoftRaid to re-certify it. Didn't even get more than 90 seconds in the certification (and re-tried two more times) before it encountered a write-error and alerted me the disk should be replaced immediately. This one was real. Thankfully the card didn't totally die until last night's project had been off-loaded and before the next one had begun. Obviously I don't have those cards attached to the computer all the time like my other volumes so if there were warning signs leading up to that, I wouldn't have received the notifications without the CFast in the reader. I'm strangely thankful that I know what happened though and don't have to wonder, thanks to SoftRaid. Other than more money down the drain on an Angelbird card that didn't last more than two years, the SoftRaid part was well worthwhile!

@guitarflex

this is a relatively common problem. We have a line of cards now, and bundle it with software that does the certify process to "refresh" the drives, so they get back to new performance (or fail the certify process) Certify is a great test of drives!

@softraid-support CFast 2.0 cards? I actually ran a search on the website (Mac sales) but didn't see any listed....
