Red light on Mercury Elite (no errors according to SoftRAID)

I've got a RAID 5 setup spanning a few Mercury Elite Pro Duals. One disk recently threw a red light in my enclosure, which is worrisome, but SoftRAID shows no errors. Should I consider the disk bad? Or is there possibly an issue with the enclosure? Any steps I should take?

From the manual:

If one of the hard drives inside the Mercury Elite Pro Dual fails, or if one of the drives is removed without the RAID mode being reset, the corresponding LED will blink red.

So you need to investigate and probably replace a drive, yes.

@softraid-support Thanks for the response. It's not blinking red, but solid. Restarting the computer (and the drives) has made the light disappear.

And I would expect SoftRAID to alert me if there was a problem with the disk; is that not the case? All disks read "no errors."

This is a hardware RAID device. Unless you are using it in "JBOD" mode, with SoftRAID?

SoftRAID cannot see inside hardware RAID chipsets, they present a "LUN" to the operating system, without access to the actual disks.

I'm using JBOD mode and using  SoftRAID to create the RAID array.

I am inquiring about the solid red light.

@softraid-support I thought I was answering; maybe I misunderstood. The red light is on an enclosure that *can* be used as a hardware RAID device, however it *is* being used in independent mode. SoftRAID is in charge of the RAID, not the device.

Assuming this the black TB2 version?

I read up on this and if it were in hardware RAID mode, the solid red light means the disks are "out of sync" and this condition would need to be fixed.

However this is JBOD. So that does not apply. I think this was a short term "bug" of some kind. Since it has gone away, you are most likely fine. If it comes up again, let me know.

I understood you have JBOD in my prior response. The diagnostic lights are trickier to interpret in JBOD mode.

Its also possible the one drive was temporarily hung, but SoftRAID should have shown an out of sync error.

So I don't know for certain, but since it is cleared up, lets watch and see. In general, red means a drive failing to respond.

@softraid-support Got it! Thank you so much. I'll keep an eye on it and will run a verify on the disk tonight when it's not in use.

Do a validate volume instead. Essentially the same, but it will update any parity blocks if need be.
