What are the complete instructions for replacing a failed disk. If I put an uninitialized disk in the enclosure will SoftRaid give me the opportunity to do that? Is the rebuilding automatic or do I have to start it. If so, how do I do that?

or when you insert the disk, you must initialize it with SoftRAID. This is software, so it is not automatic.
After initializing the disk, you can select your volume and "Add Disk". Set volume optimization to Workstation, so it rebuilds faster.
Make sure your volume is mounting normally at all times. If you get a read only error, or your volume is not mounted, stop.
We recommend you "certify" the disk before using it. This takes about a day per 2TB capacity, but burns in the disk and avoids early failure.

I've watched the "How to Replace a Faulty Drive in a RAID Array in SoftRAID 7" and I have a question; given I have a Thunderbay 8 DAS with a faulty drive in a 5 drive RAID 5 volume, can I assume that I do not need to unmount and shutdown my Thunderbay before I can pull the faulty drive and insert a replacement? In the video, the narrator says the RAID volume needs to be unmounted and the unit shutdown.

"Best Practices" say unmount/disconnect. Thunderbolt does support hot swap, but in the video we are promoting best practices.

@softraid-support I have found it difficult to unmount my Thunderbay volume because there are a variety of services running on my Mac that use that volume. I am hoping that I can do the validate, remove drive from volume, insert new drive, certify drive, and add it to the volume without having to power down the DAS.
