Newbie here.
I have a Thunderbay 4 using thunderbolt 3 ports as well as a couple two older Thunderbay enclosures using thunderbolt 2 connections (attached to my MacBook Pro running OS 12.6.1)
Although I have put hard drives to sleep unchecked, when the computer display goes to sleep, it always comes back minus the thunderbolt 3 connected enclosure.
Is this a known problem?
Yes it is pretty much a known issue Mac hardware issue. Uncheck Put drives to sleep and disable display sleep seems to avoid this.
@softraid-support Thanks.
So thunderbolt 3 = no energy saving mode and manually turning off your system after use
but thunderbolt 2 through an adaptor = yes to automated sleep mode and leaving it all on.
Is this your experience? I am assuming TB2 and TB3 are the same for sleep. I have not tested between TB2 and TB3 for this.
@softraid-support Yes... I have a Thunderbay 4 using thunderbolt 3 ports as well as a couple two older Thunderbay enclosures using thunderbolt 2 connections (attached to my MacBook Pro running OS 12.6.1)
The one with the thunderbolt 3 ports is vanished upon coming back from sleep. Vanished from both the desktop and the softraid interface. The other two thunderbolt 2 ports connected thunderbays are mounted, and appear, even if they have messages saying they were ejected improperly, they are there when the computer wakes up.
Only a full restart brings back the thunder bay connected by thunderbolt 3
@softraid-support how comes this only applies to Thunderbay? with my Promis Pegasus connected via Thunderbolt 4 I don't have such issues?
This is indicative of a hardware issue somewhere, if the disks are no longer showing up in MacOS. Cable or enclosure most likely. Perhaps a dock if you have one.
MacOS may not be reporting any disconnects. I know if I connect a 4 drive Apple RAID 0, A) it constantly wakes/sleeps when the mac is sleeping and if I keep files open, I am apt to get disconnection notices. But not as often. SoftRAID actively warns you of any issues, it is a more aggressive than anything else. We want users to know of any possible issue.
It was a hardware issue: specifically a brand new hub in the thunderbolt 3 serial chain.
there was a CalDigit Thunderbolt Station 4 in the thunderbolt serial chain.
I will try to update the firmware in the CalDigit Thunderbolt Station 4 to see if that helps make it functional.
I found this: https://www.caldigit.com/thunderbolt-dock-sleep-mode-related-issues-under-macos-12/
Uh oh, I spoke too soon. Just now, even though I am not even using the hub in the thunderbolt chain, the thunder bay connected with thunderbolt 3 cables was suddenly ejected and disappeared. this time the computer did not even go to sleep since I was on it actually working. That's frustrating if the actual Thunderbay enclosure is faulty, because I bought it two years ago.
It disappeared off the desktop and off Softraid. But then less than a minute later it reappeared on soft raid (but not the desktop). In soft raid it shows as degraded with two missing disks. However I know those are verified and fully functioning disks. I think something is wrong with the Thunderbay 4 enclosure. Not sure what I can do about that.
the two drives did not come back, when the rest did?
Look at the enclosure if this is still the case. Are any lights flashing at all?
If you use Blink Disk Light in SoftRAID, are the two disks on the same side of the enclosure?
@softraid-support There are no lights flashing. The older thunderbays (connected with thunderbolt 2 through a thunderbolt 3 to 2 adaptor to the laptop came back. The newer thunder bay appears in soft raid, no lights are blinking on the interface. but it refuses to mount with two drives degraded suddenly in the
message.
Attach a SoftRAID tech support file, so I can see.
To be aware, I want to always differentiate between disks ejecting and they show up again in moments, and disks disappearing, but do not come back until restart or power cycle.
@softraid-support I"m also in an email exchange with soft raid support. Here is the report from the time after the drive spontaneously ejected and then could not be mounted as it showed two disks missing.
When the drive was not mounted and showed two disks missing, I was able to make the remaining two disks blink, and upon a complete restart, the array of four drives is mounted and functional with no error messages.
