Sorry, running create a SoftRAID tech. Log took over 5 minutes, and then the machine froze… again.

Could not get the diagnostic to run with sfotraid enabled disks. Would run for 5 minutes or more, then machine would freeze. Attached is a report with NO soft raid disks attached.

Second SoftRaid

report, with disks mounted. I re-started the machine with only the internal disk, then powered app the external disks.

I experienced a reproducible panic whenever I do a Time Machine backup.  Here is the Apple Crash log

Here is the SoftRAID log, but I don't know how to collect the softraid support file.

Feb 19 15:34:43 - SoftRAID Driver: SoftRAID driver loaded, version 6.2.

(Support file contains the log)

@anthonyho

The Time Machine panic happened when 6.2 is installed. Has it had a panic with 6.2.1?

See in the installed kexts, it shows 6.2?

The support file shows 6.2.1 loaded, however,  so I don't know your current status.

I thought I had installed 6.2.1, but I also puzzled about why everything show 6.2.  How can I make sure I install 6.2.1.  I tried to use the "check update" but it fails every time.

@anthonyho

this is a macOS bug that was fixed and broke again. When you install a driver, macOS updates the "extensions cache" the set of files that allow the system to startup faster, as the extensions are all queued for preloading. However, the bug is macOS is not updating this cache.

Try "uninstall SoftRAID" utilities menu. restart, install the driver, "Allow" OWC again and see if that fixes this.

Sorry, I did the reinstall but it seems it does not help

I uninstalled softraid

reboot;

install softraid from SoftRAID 6.2.1 dmg

reboot;

open softraid and let it install the driver;

security asked then open the security preference, unlock and change; driver reported installed successfully;

reboot;

softraid monitor report missing component, but I can successfully launch softraid and the "About" showing version 6.2.1;

Time machine backup;

Crash...

The following the crash report.

panic(cpu 4 caller 0xffffff8001259789): !pageList phys_addr @IOMemoryDescriptor.cpp:3305
Panicked task 0xffffff95165da670: 260 threads: pid 0: kernel_task

Any other suggestion that I should try?

No joy —

Uninstalled/re-installed driver. Rebooted, allowed OWC driver in Security. SoftRAID worked fine until I powered up the Apple Raid array.

Then, launching SoftRAID falsely reported errors on SoftRAID disks & didn’t ’see’ other drives.

Is there a way to convert the Apple RAID array to operate under SoftRaid without re-formatting the drives?

Thanks in advance!

Which volume is your Time Machine volume? What volume was being backed up?

@softraid-support

Time Machine backup volume is called Backup. It is a TB-connected OWC ThunderBay enclosure. It mainly backs up the Boot drive and another drive called Storage.

BTW, things seemed to have settled down, and I am copying the Apple-supported drive to another volume. I will then attempt to convert it under SoftRAID. This is an array of 8 1TB drives, connected via an OWC Mercury Helios 3S with a dual port SATA board (4 drives/SATA link).

There is one drive identified as "about to fail" by SoftRAID; it has been reformatted and will be removed.

@david_preston

Backup is a USB "LUN", a published hardware RAID with a Mercury Elite Pro. Its not a Thunderbolt volume at all, nor a SoftRAID volume.

The Apple RAID 0, Video RAID, can be converted to SoftRAID, yes.

So far, I don't see SoftRAID in the problem mix. Its possible the problem is the USB Hardware RAID box, I have no idea yet. Keep testing and see if you can narrow it down.
